I have seen very little about this lately. Is anyone shooting one, and what are your impressions?

Luv2, I bought one about 6 weeks ago and realy love the rifle. In particular, the barrel profile is sort of "in-between" a 1-S and 1-H, nice an meaty..
Mounted a Leupold 1.75 x 6x-32mm, it is a very nicely balanced, quick-pointing combination...
So far, have loaded mild charges of RL-15 behind some 286 gr. Woodleighs, the gun appears to be very accurate. Will need a new trigger, however, either a Clements or Moyers....
Should be just the ticket for wild boar and whitetail....I really like the cartridge...

I was wondering what is would do if it were allowed to stretch it's legs a bit. In the #1 it should be able to maximize the potential of this old round.

I have yet to push mine hard....was thinking the 286 gr. Woodleigh would settle most any account I needed it to when pushed to 2,000 fps or slightly higher.
From what I have researched, Varget or RL-15 look like promising powders....

Have been very pleased with mine, so far. Seems to not care what I feed it, or how dirty/fouled the bore is. Has yet to shoot a group over 2", and usually far less. Have run 250gr TSX's to 2500 and change. Work has caused me to shelve it for now, but see no reason to not get 9.3x64 class performance from it. Mine copper fouls pretty bad, but shoots well regardless. Plan to give Ultra Bore Coat a try, and see if that will cure it.

Did anyone ever figure out the actual rate of twist? The Ruger site still show 10".

My initial impressions? I would have to say it may be the most accurate hunting rifle I've ever owned, and has quickly become a favorite. I've put less than 20 rounds through mine, and have only loaded RL-15 with 250 Accubonds. I have not fired a 3 shot group over 1", and most are in the 1/2" - 3/4" range. Best group so far is a perfectly symmetrical triangle with the outside edge of all three holes touching. All with a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5x.

I may have missed it, but is there a reason not to believe the twist given by Ruger?

SOS When the rifles were first announced, IIRC, Ruger was listing a 1-20" twist rate. I see the Ruger web site is now listing it as 1-10". The norm in the industry for the 9.3x62 cartridge seems to be 1-14" which is sufficient to stabilize 286 gr bullets. Since the 9.3x74R fires the same bullet at about the same velocity it would seem that 1-14" would be about the optimum twist rate for the 9.3x74R. I'm also curious as to the actual twist rate. It would be nice if someone that actually has one of the rifles would measure the twist rate so we'd all know for sure what the twist rate is that Ruger used in the actual rifles. -Bob F.

SOS We had discussed it before that it seemed an abnormal rate. I made the mistake of thinking it had said 10" but it actually had said 20". They have, in fact, changed the site to 10". Maybe there is no need to doubt now that the specs have been changed?

OK! OK! I'm on the way out the door to visit my 'smith.... But I will pull the barrel on mine when I get home and measure the twist. 4-5 hours.... Ya'll hold on to your shorts.

Well if a 14 " seems like a logical choice for the 286 grainers, I could well believe they'd go to 10" just to be sure of stabilizing 320 Woodleighs.

Ta Da...!
Drum Roll, please!
I just got home and it's the 1st thing I did. By my measurements, my 9.3x74R is: 1~10"
I employed the ol' cleaning rod method pulled thru with it tight-fitting patch over a .35 cal brush. The 1st time it seemed more like 1~11". But the next two times came out 1~10"... So there you have it, guys. My #1 was just purchased two weeks ago.

SOS According to the Greenhill Formula, 1-14" should be just enough to stabilize the 320 gr Woodleigh Protected Point (which is the longest length 320 gr 9.3 bullet that Woodleigh makes). Greenhill formula: Twist = 150 x D2/L Where: D = bullet diameter in inches L = bullet length in inches 150 = a constant The Woodleigh 320 gr PP is 1.441 inches long according to the Woodleigh catalog, so: 150 x .366^2 / 1.441 = 13.944" twist rate See http://www.loadammo.com/Topics/July01.htm for more info about the Greenhill Formula. Length of Woodleigh 9.3 bullets: 320 gr Round Nose, 1.323" 320 gr Protected Point, 1.441" 320 gr FMJ, 1.412" -Bob F.

Just got done breaking rocks at 300 yds yesterday off a pair of shooting stix. At 110*, it didn't take long for it to heat up, but with 3 shot strings, POI remained the same. I need to replace the trigger, as it's very stiff, but the gun will still shoot MOA with 250g Accubonds to 200 yds with a Leupold 1.5x5.
