The son of a very good friend of mine is leaving this summer for the Navy, I've known this young man for many years and he is one of the good ones. Looking for gift recommendations. Willing to spend a few hundred dollars for the right gift. If it helps with recommending a gift, he was a high school wrestler and we hunted a lot together. Please, serious gifts only. Thanks

A multi-tool like a Leatherman or Gerber could be appropriate and useful.

A lot of Navy units issue multi-tools to their members.

OP, something to be aware of is that at his first unit, he may be required to live aboard a ship where he will be very limited on what he can have on board.

I’ll second the MacBook. Being able to keep in touch was a huge deal while I was in. And with all the advancements in tech most guys have wi-fi connectivity just about anyplace.

Other options would be the money when he comes home after basic. He should have 10 days to a week to come back home. Will require a drive or a plane tix. A little folding money or party for him when he come back. Just knowing he has the support will help a lot.

Yeah. In addition to being able to keep in touch, a pair of headphones and a MacBook will provide entertainment during off hours.

It will be his prize possession while at sea.

You might wait until he completes Basic , that way he might have a better idea of what he needs. If you decide on a knife, you could take it to a jewelry shop and have the blade inscribed with his name and the date he enlisted or some such.

My father had a nice custom knife made for me when I returned from Desert Storm with my name, rank, and unit on it. Still a very prized possession.

Some advice. I got this advice from my retired Chief grandfather and two E6 uncles and I followed it. The advice is to volunteer for any and every extra duty while in boots. I volunteered for the drill team and was a skivy waver. I volunteered for trash details and anything else that came available. The extra duty was always better than the F’n with the company was getting ! I also got a behind the scenes look and often small group or individual instruction. I feel I got better training and some pride from being on the flag team. After boots volunteering is not highly recommend smile

He'll be limited in what he can have for a while. Wait til after he gets through basic and settled in somewhere.

Right
We hit basic training and as soon as we got off the bus your stuff was on the ground and they went through everything. He doesn’t even have to bring a toothbrush....

Mac book is good idea but downside is it will be obsolete is 5 years.

My thought would be a WW2 Era knife with the USN markings on it. I have one at home which is a great knife, passed on from my dad (who wasn't in the Navy.) I think mine is marked "Camillus NY. and USN"

He would likely have it forever and remember you fondly when using or oiling it, as opposed to other things
