Any of you fine knowledgeable folk have a favorite load for 155 Scenars in the 300WM?

A buddy just bought his first rifle. Went to Cabelas and, of course, they sold him a 300WM for them giant Georgia whitetails. And of course, they have no ammo for it. I told him if he came up with cases and a die set I’d at least get him started as those items seem to be a bit easier to come by.

I have R17, R22, H4350, H4831sc available.

Thanks.

Lol. I bet they do!

We were on the phone and he says “ man, I bought a deer rifle today!”

Oh yeah? What did you get?

“300 Winchester Magnum!”

Da fugg? They all out of 400 Mags?

I don’t know? Why? Is the 300 not big enough?

Nah......I guess it’ll do. 😂

That's a tough one. I don't know of anyone with a 300WM that shoots 150-weight class bullets. Seems like 68-70 gr of H4350 would get you over 3k but under 3100. That's where I'd want to be for smaller deer at closer ranges.

Ha, that's cool! It falls into the why the hell not camp in my book. If they shoot it well, I can't see nothing much wrong with it, and I'd think those 155's running 3000+ will zap bucks.

I'd love to shoot one into water jugs at 3200+ or so and see how they hold up.

I read through the scenar thread again last week. Pat mentioned in it that one of his friends used them in 300 weatherby. At that time anyway. If it was a bad idea I don’t think he’d have even mentioned it.

I’m also interested in this.

I'm sure they will work fine. Not really concerned with the bullet. I just had to chuckle and rib him a bit over Cabelas selling a brand new shooter a 300 WM to hunt deer in GA. I wouldn't of been my suggestion, but I'm sure it''ll do the job just fine.

Seeing that he lives across the country, "load development" ain't gonna really happen. Hoping that Mule Deer or Scenarshooter will chime in with "try xx.xx of xx"
Ive tried several of Mule Deer's suggestions in the past and all have turned out to be very accurate loads that required no dicking about. smile

I’d bet you could pull Sierras accuracy load and have a good start. I believe they have 155 data for the 300 Win.

I saw that too. I just ordered some 180’s for the Mashburn and 105’s for the 6 CM from Midway. I wanted to get 155’s as well but they were out. Might have to get in on the PV ones.

The 105’s were your fault... I couldn’t resist. If they shoot I’ll get a pile of them.

Lol..... I got nervous and with all the chat about scenars I ended up ordering 1000 more 105’s a few hundred 90’s for a 10 twist and 150’s for 280AI should I run out of 168 Bergers.

We shot some today and was able to get started with the Howa 6 creed but it got dark on us before we finished. The 43.4 load was best but I didn’t get past 43.6. Maybe tomorrow. Like yours the did well though.

Good man, that’s a ripper outta the little case huh? I’m dying to get that sucker out at distance some.

Staball seems like it works pretty well and the good thing is it sits on the shelves around here.

I load 155 Scenar’s exclusively in my 308’s. One of my three 300 WSM’s is set exclusively for them too. The 308 runs @ 2900 & the WSM runs at 3285 fps which just so happened to be the sweet spot for both on the high end. Accuracy is one ragged hole for both.

I have killed 3 very large pigs & one Texas Whitetail buck & they were all one shot drops. Small example to be honest. I am impressed enough with the bullet that I bought 2000 of them.

I am running 75 grains of R16 with 150 BT in my 300 WM and it is a deer getting machine. You can use R16 data for R17, sometimes 1-1 or sometimes the R17 loads or lower by half to one grain. For the Scenars I would drop down a half grain as I think they might create more pressure but not sure. Speer has data for R17 and you could compare the 150 & 165 to extrapolate a load for the Scenar.

I plan on loading the Scenar at some point but have several 100 BT to run through first. The 300s are inordinately popular in South Tx. for deer. I think it is due to the brush and also the inordinately expensive leases and hunts, so a little overkill is not a bad idea in that situation. I got tired of the domestic brass lack of uniformity and have been running RWS cases lately and never want to go back to the others. If you see it or Lapua snap it up as it can be almost unobtanium.

The RWS I can load up to 20+ times with middling loads where the Winchester brass was suspect at 8-10 loads. So I can somewhat justify the price. Check to see how whatever brass you get matches your buddy's chamber. In some cases head space is off so much that incipient case separation can start on the first firing. Some loaders are so concerned about this they will create a false shoulder for the first loading. I have not done this as I have tight chambers and size only a minimum amount.

So is this a frangibe bullet that blows up internally, like an Amax or a match style bullet? I assume its not intended to mushroom and drive deep?

That's why I'm loading them for my buddy. I have several hundred and don't shoot them much. He may as well.
The lighter weight should take a bit of bark off the WM and they are fairly tough.

Thinking 72 or 73 of h4350 should work without worry.

I just saw the Petersons is selling what they call 300 WM longs. These are designed to head space on the shoulder and should help alleviate some of the problems with the shorter cases. They were also less expensive than RWS and reports so far or that is good brass. I would stock up on these with matching lot numbers. I was looking for some other brass and if the search had a filter for in stock only items I would have come up blank. Some of the bullet calibers were 100% out of stock.
