My son bought a nice truck rifle. A savage110 in 30-06. It has one problem though. The barrel nut is cracked. My question is how serious is this? Can we just let it ride? As far as I know it's not a safety issue. However I'm not a Savage rifle enthusiast, so I'm asking here.

Barrel nuts are cheap compared to blowing up a rifle or injuring yourself. Logic tells me if the nut is cracked it could possibly not hold the barrel in place since it acts as a jam nut. Possible for the barrel to work it's way loose and cause excessive headspace?

That needs to be fixed. You can buy the nut itself for about $12 from Midway, any gunsmith should be able to install it. A lot of savage enthusiasts have the tools and could do it in a couple of minutes. I wouldn't just let it ride, the barrel could loosen causing the headspace to change and cause an unsafe condition.

A cracked barrel nut can lead to headspace issues. Not good. Cheap fix with a go gage and barrel nut wrench. If you can get the nut off easily, a strap wrench can tighten the nut correctly. In the past I have swapped several barrels for friends and family. Most swaps are simple, but I have had a couple of barrels that the nuts were frozen on because of bluing salts in the threads. Not a common problem though.

Exactly how tight is it? Is an action vise needed?

The web says the nut can be 50-70 ft pounds and I've had a few that were that tight. I don't have an action wrench and a barrel vise wasn't optimal so I improvised. I used a piece of 1/4 x 2" flat bar 18" long and cut out the shape of the recoil lug in one end to make my "recoil lug wrench" to go with the nut wrench. The recoil lug is keyed to the action My lug wrench goes on first along with the nut wrench. I can loosen or tighten, wrench to wrench which makes better sense to me anyway..
I recommend you put on a new nut!

Over tightening??? It looks like midway has both wrenches. I may try and talk him into selling it.

Sorry about that larry! This sounds like the old 24 Hour Campfire where members tried to help other members before the personal attacks started. Well done Sir.
