My question is, I am using this blank for a Win. 94 30/30 rifle stock. I have cut it to a shape that is the shape of the stock (but still square) that i want to use for the 94. About the same as the original stock. As i open this blank up i'm finding small pockets of openings in the wood as i go along. Each time i come across one i stop and fill it in with color epoxy, and it is working out great so far! There is no grain structure to this fantistic peice,so i plan on bedding a small amount up on reciever end for the tang area and will use a pillar for the stock screw. Would a soft recoil pad be easier on the wood than a cresent buttplate or would that really matter. This is the most burly blank i have ever worked on, so i guess i asking is i think the stock wil be sound for the 30/30 round. What do you think? Have you worked with burl before and what do you think of it?

Haven't worked with it.
What do I think? That you're going to have one pimped out '94 and I'm going to be jealous. Nope scratch that, I don't think, I know I'm going to be jealous.
Congrats, please post the finished results!

Looking at the grain flow up front, my first inclination would be to worry a bit about structural integrity. One likes to have the grain starting to run fore & aft when getting into the tang area. A 30-30 doesn't dish out much punishment though, so it may hold if it's well cured and a dense and hard piece of wood. Regardless, it should be beautiful to look at.
Don't hold the barrel though and put any 9 iron swings on snakes. 1Minute

I'm using this blank for the 94 because it is a smaller size stock, the picture should have been flipped because the bottom side has full figure through 95% of the blank. Doing so will allow for a matchting forend! It is very dry (8%) and so hard that my wood tools are taking a beating (really i think im the one taking the beating..LOL) trying to get it shaped. Yes, the tools are sharp and the blank is like working on concrete...But with all that black burl and light colored background, i'm still going to use a little epoxy and a pillar for the tang area.
