Looking for an easy fix if there is one.

Older shower basin in basement of my great grandpas house that hasn't been used in probably 30 years.

I noticed the drain cover was off but ran some water to rinse basin out.

The water came out on the floor and saw that the caulk/silicone or whatever somebody had put in there to try and fix the leak was all cracked.

I haven't chipped the whatever out to see what it is and what is beneath but was wondering if there is a drain hub that will slip fit inside/ouside of the PVC that is in there for drain.

Hub would need to be short as well because the stub runs up close to the top of the tile and just has a thin chrome cover that goes over.

Any ideas?

The shower pan is probably bad. The tile will probably need to come out. Shower pan certainly is lead. Goes vertical up the wall 6”. Drain probably has a lead and oakum joint, new drain body and pan will be needed. Lot of work to repair that, better to rip the entire shower out, start over. You probably ain’t wantin to hear that.

But, what the hell do I know??

Lead and oakum w PVC??

I was wondering about just tearing the whole bathroom out. Toilet is so covered in scale it really needs replaced. Only thing decent is sink.

Block drains and go on.

It is just an extra in basement, steel stall with basin, sink and schitter.

Let next owner put a bathroom in if they want.

Rip out the fixtures, but save the under-slab plumbing. It'll save you work and possibly up resale as a future bathroom.

Tile is actually some kind of sheet vinyl.

Looks like a round copper flange of sorts. Cat hair around the joint, the rest of it was like wet glue. Came right out.

If you want to Afro-Engineer, it you will need to learn to dance. Clean up the pipe and shower pan area to perfect. Use a toothbrush and acetone with lots of paper towels. Fill the gap with urethane window caulk. This is the $20.00 a tube stuff that window installers use, Lifetime Warranty type available in all colors.

That old pan is probably leaking from more than one spot, plus rotted wood behind it.

I agree. Tear it out and replace it with a new stall. Small ones like that aren't that expensive.

I dont if you are planning on selling the place or not, but at any rate you need to totally get rid of that horrible eyesore and replace it with a new bathroom. That mess radically reduces the market appeal of your house, the money you spend on new stuff will be more than offset in increased value. If you aren't going to sell it, your wife will be happy and that make for a happy you. grin

Any color that you want. The urethane window caulk is considered structural. The guys that did my windows in the house gave me 2 five gallon buckets of used tubes. The siding was off the house at the time, so I caulked every knot and seam on the plywood.
