I have an 11 yo daughter that would like to try deer hunting next fall. I have a model 70 featherweight in 243 that I could work some loads up for but she is not very big and right now the stock is too long for her. It is a nice stock and I don’t want to cut it down and so am starting to look for an alternative.

I am looking at the Boyd offerings and see they have an stock that is adjustable for lop and comb called the All In One. It is certainly not the traditional look that I like but in this case I want to make sure what I put on for her is comfortable for her to get behind and shoot. Has anyone tried a stock like this for a young hunter? I know it would be heavy but we would be stand hunting and likely only shooting from rest.

Also is the featherweight barrel slimmer than a standard model 70? Wondering about the barrel channel fit.

If anybody has any thoughts I would appreciate it.

Thanks
NVM

I can't answer your query, but I've been researching a similar project and for an extra $100, Hogue will cut a M70 FWT stock down to 12.25" LOP (with reinstalled recoil pad). Just another option.

Yes, FWT barrel is slimmer than sporter. (Still can't answer about Boyd's 😇)

Pre or post 64?

I have a 12 1/2” McMillan for a pre 64 fw I would likely be willing to loan you until she grows older if it’s pre ...

And yes, the featherweight barrel is a slimmer profile.

Thanks Everyone - I will look at the Hogue stock. I don’t see where Boyd has a stock that fits the featherweight barrel profile but I might need to call them next week as I could be missing something from there website. I guess putting a fwt in a sporter stock would certainly be free-floated.

AKwolverine - it is a post-64 but thank you for the generous offer.

Is yours 1-piece or 2-piece bottom metal? I have a nice compact featherweight stock that i’d like to sell. Made for 1-piece bottom metal, though.

I believe mine is a one-piece bottom metal. It has 2 mounting bolts. Based on my knowledge it is the current model - I bought it new in 2014 or 2015. Slope77 if you can send me a PM with what you have. Thanks

Buy this, chop, have her paint it to her hearts content.

For $40, you won’t care what color she chooses!

FYI: the CDNN stocks are not "drop in" for a new M70 FWT. Require some sanding and bedding, etc. (Not saying its an issue, just a heads up that they aren't like Hogue or Stockys.)

Good to know on the CDNN stocks - for the price that still seems reasonable.

Does anybody have any experience with the Hogue stock? With what I can find it sounds like they are tough and have a comfortable finish but maybe a little thick in the grip for small hands.

Thanks again everyone.

Nvm - I've been chatting on and off with them for a few days. They are thicker at the wrist... the upsides being a kid can't really hurt the rubber and even the version with pillars only (as opposed to full aluminum block) are drop-in ready and don't require glass bedding for the kind of shooting most kids are gonna do. They can technically cut the LOP down to 12", but you'd lose the back swivel. The extra .25 seemed worth not having to mess with rigging in a new swivel set up. They are also thicker in the forearm, but I figure most kids are shooting off a rail or rest anyway...

I was in the same position having found a new SS classic .243 fwt.
On ebay I grabbed a new synthetic stock which will get cut and padded to a proper length, of course I have a little time as that first grandchild isn't due until May!

Haha HW my oldest is 4... so I'm a little out in front of necessity as well. I went with a standard length barrel (22" in 708) to cut down on noise and recoil... won't be perfect balance with a 12" LOP but a 6 year old won't know that shooting off a rail.

My first grandson just turned one and there is 7-08 Model 70 Classic FWT compact in the safe already! Along with a Cricket and an AR with the adjustable stock. grin
