Trying to get an old friend back out into the field, for Antelope, Deer
(maybe even an Elk) hunt this Fall. He really wants to use his classic
Weatherby Mark - V <German vintage> rifle ... but, besides having
what he claims are a Ba-zillion rounds on it ... it’s factory barrel has
a 1 in 12 twist rate and she won’t stabilize any of todays
premium (or longer + higher BC) bullets.
Sooo this is a long shot ... But I’m looking for a Weatherby Mark-V
take-off barrel already chambered in .270 Weatherby mag with the
more current 1 in 9.5 (or 1 in 10) twist. To fit in his wood stock,
it will probably need to be a sporter weight (not an Accumark contour).
Already have his dies, plenty of brass, and necessary components,
but would like to shoot Barnes 130/140 TSX or at least 129 LRX’s.
Yes, I’ve offered to loan him one of my rifles and that is our back-up
plan, but believe he’s looking to place a Book-end on his hunting carreer,
by shooting what he started out with . . .
(kind of a . . . Dance with who ya’ brung).
Willing to give this 3-4 weeks, to see if someone has a new (or low
round-count) take-off ...with the Mo-Better twist rate ... before falling back to
Plan B, or Plan B-Ver 2.94 . . There’s not enough time to order-up a barrel,
have it smithed, do load work-up, plus let him shoot it some, before his season would
start (as he has enough pref-points to guarantee any Speed-Goat tag in the state).
