A buddy is buying his first deer rifle. He seems to have settled on a 30-06. What good deals have you seen out there lately on deer rifle (bolt actions). I told him to look for something that has a good trigger. He is strongly considering the tikka t3. I guided him slightly toward the Mauser m18’s but not sure what else you’d recommend. Thanks for any feedback.

Right now? Can’t beat that Mauser. It’s the same price more or less as the Ruger and the Savage and noticeably better fit and finish.

The magazine on the Mauser is light years better than that in the Tikka.

The Howa Walnut Hunter is worth looking at in that price range if you can find one. Their actions are very smooth. https://www.howausa.com/rifles/walnut/

I have a Tikka, and M18, and M12. Get the M18 unless there are still some of those $499 M12s left.

I have both a Ruger American in 30-06 and a Savage model 111 in 300 WSM with the Accu trigger. Both are very accurate and I've killed quite a few critters with both
Pro Ruger: light weight, accurate, removable magazine con Ruger: magazines tend to hang up and ammo won't feed to the top. They sent me 2 replacement mags before I got one that will feed reliably. No bolt lock, If you carry with a round chambered, the bolt won't stay down. It can come open and you might lose some rounds when carrying on your shoulder. Not an issue if you don't carry hot as the cocking spring will keep it closed.
pro Savage: Accu-trigger is great, easy to adjust. 3 position safety with bolt lock, very accurate con Savage: heavier than the Ruger, non-removable magazine

Why not get a 308 as they are lighter rifles with about 90% of the same punch as an 06. However, ammo is hard to find right now.

My preference would be the Mauser 18 followed by which of the rest had the best price, I think all the sale prices and rebates are over now, and finding any in stock now will be problematic.
