I have a John Deere 240 garden tractor that’s in need of a new motor. These old 240’s are notably under powered at 14 hp. and I am going to go with a bigger motor since, well, it’s the American way to do things. So now the question is, which motor do I put in it? I was figuring something in the 20-24hp. range. So I turn this over to the Campfire brethren for suggestions, realistic to outrageous, let’s hear them!

That’s a little more than I was thinking, but it’s a very durable choice. I wonder how hard it would be to source one?

454 from about a '72 Vette. Dual Holley carbs. Don't forget the chromed Hooker headers.

An older twin cyl B&S Vanguard in many hp configurations can be had fairly cheap

I have a 1990 John Deere 318 that I had repowered with a 23 hp Briggs Vanguard. Noticeably more power than the 18 hp Onan that was in it. It's smoother running and quieter than the Onan was. Kohler and Honda also made repower kits for it. I chose the Vanguard for no other reason that it was readily available. Would have had to wait on the other ones. Not disappointed at all.
