According to George Madis Winchester Book, the Barrel is Rolled Steel and not Damascus! If the Customer wanted a Damascus Barrel, he could order it! All of Mine are Steel! You really can tell by looking at them. They have like a swirl mark configuration look to them, as to how they were hand formed, and made!
All of the barrels are steel. Didn’t look for exactly what Winchester offered, but Remington M1889’s barrels were offered in three grades. Grade 1 was decarbonized steel, Grade 2 was offered in fine twist steel and the highest Grade 3 was offered in Damascus steel.
