Rifle is in 303 savage. Plastic butt plate says SRAC. Ser # is 50.xxx. I believe barrel is round 20 inches long. Not a TD. So is it an 1895 or an 1899 H? I dont have the rifle in my hands yet.

1895's had 4 digit serial numbers, so 10,000...

By serial number it would date to probably June, 1904. If it's a 20" barrel, it would be a model 1899F saddle ring carbine unless it's been cut or is a special order. A saddle ring carbine with a leftover 1895 hard rubber buttplate would be an extremely unusual rifle, might be a special order 1899A SR.

Maybe.. a Perris?

A normal SR has a 22" barrel. But it would have been an easy fit to the SR's since they were normally cut for the smooth, steel shotgun buttplate.

Probably 22" then. There were only about 30 Perris rifles made. If it's 20".. give me a yell. grin

1895 is always easy to identify. Opening in the top of the bolt. Serial number of 4 digits usually between 3000 and 8000. They were all made by Marlin so look for the JM (John Marlin) on the side of the barrel.

You usually have to remove the forearm to see the JM stamp and some have only an M. The factory offered to install an 1899 bolt in the 1895's after the introduction of the 1899. Some 1895's have the 1899 bolt. The 4 digit serial number is the best indication.

Interesting. I have two and they both have the visible Marlin mark and the few others I have encountered also had a visible stamping. Did not know about the 1899 bolt change. I gave up a long time ago trying to learn all there is to know about Savage rifles. A long time ago one of the guys on here posted "with Savage never say never".

I'll have to check my 1895's and see if the JM or M is visible with the forearm in place. I've only seen the marking when I removed the forearm. No one knows it all so just learn about what interests you and don't forget "with Savage never say never".

I've only seen one 1895 at an auction and the JM was visible. I forget exactly where it was. When the auctioneer held it up he noted the 4 digit serial number and gave a brief history lesson on the Marlin connection.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.
