I've known several people , guys , who don't do anything but work .
No interest in hunting/shooting/fishing/golf , riding a motorcycle/bicycle/4wheeler - no exercise , they can't have a conversation outside of something pertaining to work or money . They might buy something like the things mentioned above - use it once or twice then sell it or leave it sit dormant .
My old best friend slowly became that way in his upper 20's quickly getting worse , by 35 years of age he wasn't himself anymore although he did take time to marry and they have two daughters . I've hinted to him - stop and smell the roses - NOPE - his 30+ year addiction to working 7 days a week 12-14 hours per day is worse than ever . Having a 60th birthday party in June , am I going ? - nope - he'll be on the phone biting his fingernails doing what he worships - working !
I thank God I'm not like that , I consider it a sickness at this point .
The End .

Used to go 7 days a week 10-14 a day when I had my remodeling business for several years.
I was never that asshat that tore out someone’s bathroom and didnt come back for 3 days. I stayed with it.
Missed a few of my kids’ birthdays, missed visiting my grandmother and mother in the nursing homes on weekends, etc.
I wasn’t broke, I didnt have a bunch of car payments or anything like that.
I can’t really explain myself. I did pay my house off at age 29.
Got myself a do-nothing govt job last 10 years and hid out to decompress.

Work is a means to an end. It’s not the end. The same can be said for money. Work can add meaning to your life. But it’s not the meaning of life. The same can be said for money.
Every day on this side of the ground is a win.

That's a pretty modern view. A few generations ago, most of America was experiencing something different. Work is required for life. This is the story of human existence except for a relative few in a narrow window of time. Life and work are synonymous. If you don't get that, you've had a life of ease that few can even imagine.

Worked hard or at least steady until last year. When I was younger I played a lot harder than I worked! That's the reason I can barely move some days now. Wouldn't change a thing except avoiding evil wife #2. That mini Satan stole some good years from me.
I have some younger kin folks that only look for the get rich quick angle. Tell them to work steady and live inside what you make. Pay for your toys or play with something else you can pay for.

Life does not equal work, although work is a necessary component for life. Life does not equal money, although money is a necessary component for life. That’s my perspective. Yours may be different.

There's a sense of completeness that comes with being busy. Some don't want it or like it, some live for it.
I'm somewhere in between. I'm not afraid to take two weeks off, but also frequently love a grinding week of work.

My work binges happen in spurts. I'll go like hell for as long as it takes, then take some substantial time off. Feast or famine. Work hard, play hard. Makin' hay while the sun shines. Yada, yada...
I really like to take most of January off and deer hunt or sit by a fire and tinker on stuff. Deer season just ended a couple days ago. I only hunted twice all season and none in January. Hurricane Sally left a mess around here. With a little luck, I might get some quality time off about July.
Now a friend of mine who has a roofing business loves to work. He has only taken 4 days off since Sept. 16. I don't think he worships working, it's just what he does.

IMO, the key to happiness is finding out what YOU need (family or individual) to be happy.
For us, it was enough to do what we wanted, but also the time off to do what we wanted.
My wife has been part time for several years. We're all a happier family, and do not miss the extra money or bonuses at all.
I personally took a cut in pay by getting off the call-schedule at the hospital.
Again, being able to go to the lake for all the summer holidays, and be with family Christmas and Thanksgiving is more than worth it.
Then again, we worked hard and saved hard for a decade before kids.

I'm not much different than your friend... I have worked many a 100 hour work week when I was young... When I got a normal job... I still worked every other week end... Saturday and Sunday.... even just a few years ago I found myself working every day for 6 weeks in a row from time to time. . The last five years, I have been woking a shift of 16 hours on Friday, 16 hours on Saturday and Sunday's only 13 hours.... since that left me Monday thru Thursday I got a part time job at a local old folks home... for for a year and a half I worked two jobs.... every day... for. year and a half.
Got reprimanded by my employer for a few years straight because my work year was 56 weeks long... you see, I get 5 weeks vacation but I only take one... and cash out the other 4 weeks. They gave up after a new change in management....
I'm not rich.... But. I have my bills paid. I have very little debt and I have a good cushion in cash savings... My house is paid for and is really not much.... But, I own a little bit of land. I shop for all my clothes at thrift stores and never buy new furniture. Heat my house with wood and I don't have any cable TV... I only just got a cell phone two years ago....
Last week, I went in for a stress test... Wednesday, I meet with a cardiologist for treatment options... and Thursday, a lawyer to file my will.
All I ever did was work.... and now I see the end coming....
Chit...
Well... we have come to the point.... where... the parasites are killing the host. It's only a matter of time now.
They only win.... when they cheat.

My dad was one of those guys that worked 6 days a week and we missed many vacations and camping trips at the last minute due to him working! When I was younger I refused to work 50-60hr weeks and I was branded as a slacker. I had two young girls at home and didn’t need to work that much to pay my bills as we were/are smart with our money. I also put family first and refused to miss the important things with the girls as they grew up! I worked with older guys that had no life, hobbies, families and a few that wanted to work long days and weekends to get away from their families! I never understood why you would put yourself in that position! I still do my 40 or maybe a little more but I don’t have a $1k truck payment and we cover our bills easily with our salaries!
I work to live while many I know live to work! Life is too short and there are deer and elk to hunt and fish in the rivers to catch!

I really feel sorry for all of you who hate your job so much that you had to go and create another life for yourself outside of work.

There's a LOT of people like this. People that will do anything for a dollar. They don't work because they need money, they work because they CRAVE money. And they often very much look down on any of the rest of us that do not share that addiction. Because we're not as "successful" as they are...

I 've loved my work for the last 15 years. First 10 was a lot of hours and a lot of weekends. Last 5 has been nice. Home when I want to be.
There are folks who's identity is wrapped up in what they do. Can live or grow beyond it.
I know quite a few folks that get out of the military and flounder with no identity outside of the handful of years they spent in the Army. Sad.
It's a short ride. Foolish to not try and enjoy it.
