Many years ago while working near Kaktovik, Ak I had the opportunity to try muktuk, when asked how I enjoyed it I respond "not so much", the local replied " you should have put A-1 sause on it". I don't think it would have improved the flavor much.

They look the same...

Assume you mean HP Sauce, and no. They are not similar.

fresh muktuk has very little flavor. It is all about the stiff rubbery texture.

I've never had fresh muktuk, so I will take Sitka Deer's word for that.

The muktuk that I was offered was black, and it was stored in whale oil.

It had a LOT of flavor, none of it good! eek sick

Laughing! And you are right. I assumed it was fresh because very few would put aged muktuk anywhere near their faces.

But you did...
wink

Boiling food is a great way of cooking in UK.

Interesting I got the name wrong it's HP sauce after House of Parliment...which is now made in nederland..
But A1 is still made in the UK...

Sorry SD, I followed PD's link before changing pages...
How would you describe the two flavors since the are both tomato based " Brown sauce"?

Yep, I did!

I wanted to show that I respected the old Inuit guys who were offering it to me, so down it went! cry laugh

When in Canada's Northwest Territories, I did the same thing when offered the contents of a reindeer stomach that had been buried in the ground to ripen by a family group of Slavey. Whoooooeeee!

Both are sweet and acidic (vinegar) but A1 is bland compared to HP, IMO. HP has actual flavors beyond just sweet. I find HP far superior.
