Folks say this is a dangerous idea to use lead from old automobile batteries. Ive heard tales of exotic heavyvmetals and fumes and such. Why not scrap some batteries for bullets?

Too much acid. Too much chance of flammable toxic fumes.

Scrap roof and pipe are so much safer it is not funny. You can buy alloys to blend with the near pure lead to get what you want. Try your nearest scrap yard or metal recycler .

It's not the acid, it's calcium used in battery alloys (used to retard corrosion and slow sedentary discharge).

When melted with normal casting alloys it produces arsine or sabine gasses that are lethal in small amounts, especially with any humidity, plus it creates a lumpy, frothy alloy (don't ask me how I know).

Foundries generally have serious venting systems and it's workers have precautions that most of us in our garage or shed don't access to, and have processes to make calcium additives into castable alloys.

This has been discussed several times in this forum, the one word answer is simply DON'T !

take batteries to recycle center, get money, use money to buy lead at the recycle center.
