Years ago, I was stationed in Michigan with USAF. My boss was a Staff Sergeant who loved to hunt as much as I did. His rifle was a semi-auto Remington in 6mm and he really did quite well with that outfit. We never had to blood trail a deer that he shot with that fast 6mm. I'm sure that he shot factory ammo.

Many years later, I bought a Remington .243 which turned out to be a tack driver with any 95 grain hunting bullet.

RickT....

I've always thought the old Military Mauser magazine length would be ideal....

IIRC Sako had a Short, Medium and Long Action available

For one of my 6mm's I load 105g Speer SP's at 3.033" and 95g NP's at 2.933" and don't worry about mag length.

It's a No. 1 LOL!

My 6mm is on a long action. My current 243 is on a short action, but I run 103's. My other 243 is now a 6 SLR, but it's on a Ruger and their mags are 2.900" and I run 115's. The 6 creed was supposed to be the answer to a 243 trying to run long bullets like 115's. Had one of those too, it was a nice gun.

I have always thought the coyote was designed with the 6mm Rem in mind but I have always felt that performance on deer and antelope was little disappointing. I used the 85 Nosler but I think a 85 TSX would be ideal. My first 6mm was a Ruger No.1 I bought in 1972 and I have had several since then. My current 6 is built on a Turkish Mauser action and is loaded with 85's, ahead of 4831, just as I've been loading them for almost fifty years. GD

I had a Lilja barrel screwed on a Tikka T3. Shoot 85 grain Sierra hollow point Game Kings pretty much exclusively. 3430 average velocity. Smacks the snot out of deer. The oldest daughter took her first deer with it years back. A doe at 200 yards. The doe flipped over dead so fast my daughter thought she ran off, Grin.

That thing is like a lightning bolt on coyotes too.

These days she shoots more off of the back of a horse, doing mounted shooting competitions though.

I had a 700BDL and loved it. I sold it during a hard time and regretted it ever since. The only drawback is ammo isn't as easy to find on the shelf as .243, etc. (none of it is easy these days) It is a round best suited for a reloader in my opinion. Great caliber as far as I'm concerned.

We rarely hunt bulls, as while there are lots around, the goal is filling the freezer. My dad who is 79 hunts with us each year and as long as he is still able to get out and hunt, we will continue to do late season cow hunts based out of my cabin. After that I may take her along and have her punch a couple bulls since she has only shot cows so far. She is in college now, and does mounted shooting on a pro level so her time is fairly limited these days, but we will get it done.

Meat in the freezer is always the goal. She knows I am more interested in the family time than the horns, and I am pretty sure she
thinks the same way. Last time we went together we watched a good number of bulls before popping a cow that was easier to get a side by side buggy to. smile

Then I popped a cow that we could get the buggy close to:

My first rifle was a 7.92x57 that dad re-barreled to 6mm. I have had several 6mm's since then. I still have two 6mm's and a 244. (700's and 722).

If I were down to two rifles, one would be a 6mm.

I prefer classic.

Good read here.

Sorry for older thread revamp but whats "old" is new again!

Been wanting a 6Rem for many decades. Been holding off looking for one specific rifle and finally decided just to build what I want. A doner action kinda fell in my lap so I assembled the rifle. Its a long action and the barrel chosen is a 24", 1/8 med contour.

Long time reloader here. Multiple 243's tru the years too.

Its a hunting rig for me. Last month I got the barreled action back and just finished all the stock work. Pillars, glass bed and exterior finish. Waiting a week or so before firing first shots breaking in the barrel.

Targeting the Speer 105g bullet. I have a good selection of others too.

Well constructed bullet and 6mm performs well, used one for years culling MLD whitetails and shot a 199” mule deer with one, one of my favorites.
