I am gathering pieces for my project. Donor rifle is a M70LH Classic in 30 06. I am thinking to have the factory barrel duplicated. It finishes at 24" and appears to be the same barrel only 2" shorter as the magnum 7, 300, and 338. Can anyone confirm? Other barrel suggestions?

I had mine made in a Remington magnum contour and cut to 22"...it is 0.67" at the muzzle, which should be similar to what you are planning for a contour. It handles and balances very well IME. Details here (youtube).

Mine is a benchmark finished at 23”. It’s between a #2 and #3 due to “liability”.

Sorry looks like they only have the 3b which could be fluted to lighten it up and installed with a short shank.
2b is .630 at 24” 3b is .700 at 26”

Mine is a Model 70, rebored from a 270.... 24 inch blued barrel, Control Feed Bolt action..
wouldn't change a thing....well, I did go with a composite stock on mine, and Krylon finished it in earth tone pattern, but that's about it...
I think its a good upgrade from an 06....especially for the type of hunting Maine offers...

My 338-06 and 338 win mag are both Shilen #4 and 24" long. I like that contour but a little heavier than most would want.

Classic stainless 338win had heavier contour than my .30-06 Classic.SS...As bare rifles out of the box .338 weighed more on the scales. Win factory data states 4 oz. btw: I did caliper both at the time and noted the differences.

Unless you are threading the barrel, I would go no heavier than #3. As far as length, go with what you prefer. I have settled on 23", but if I was going for a lightweight rifle, it would be a #2 contour at 22"
I have owned 338-06's with contours from 2-5 and 20-25"

I went with a Douglas #4 on mine. I would not go that heavy again -- #3 probably.
