If the .300 is sighted in at 3'' high at 100 yds. will it still be on at 250 yds. I have no experience with the .300 that's why I am asking.

What's the anticipated velocity? What's the ballistic coefficient of the particular bullet? What does "on" mean with respect to POI deviation from POA?

Assuming a 2600 fps start a 150 grain Hornady flat base sighted 3" high at 100 yards will be close to right on at 215-220 yards and not quite 3" low at 250.
This is assuming a scope sight with a line of sight 1.5" above the bore line.

It will be in the ball park if that's close enough for you.

Obviously different loads and different bullets will have different ballistics. Here's the ballistics for the Hornady 150gr 300 Savage SST ammunition. When you are 3" high at 100yds, you'll be 1" low at 250 with a max arc of around 3.3" at 125yds. Load Data
~~~~~~~~~
Name: .308 Cal, Hornady Spitzer, 150 grn
Ballistic Coeff: 0.370
Bullet Weight: 150
Velocity: 2740
Target Distance: 236
Scope Height: 1.500
400 yds -21.38 in 1880 fps 1177 fpe 0.528 sec 47.68 in 12.96 in 15.88 in I would go for 2.75" high at 100. That would give you a point blank range of 276 yards where you'll be no more than 3" high or low if you aim dead on.
Calhoun can you hit 2740 fps in a 99 without pressure problems? Mb
That's what Hornady says their 300 Savage loads get, and it's the same velocity that Savage used to advertise for the 300 Savage. Is it reality? Well... Lyman manual shows 2741 with Varget...
Start low, work you way up.
I'm not Calhoun, although I've portrayed him in a couple Mel Brooks movies, but I will submit that 2740 with a 150 out of a .300 Savage would be skating on the thin iced edge of the pond. I just looked at a couple data pages and that velocity is right at absolute max with some powders. Not a place I personally would want to go to.
the best I've done in the .300 is right near 2600 with Reloder 15 and 150 grain corelokt bullets. That gave best accuracy so I didn't push it further. Really doubt it could hit 2700 though without pressure issues.
You will notice I picked 2600 fps for my example.
I chronografhed 150 grain Sierra Spitzers and 150 Hornady Spire Points using 42.3 grains of Varget (Sierra manual lists 44 grains as max and also this recipe (44 grains) as the preferred hunting load) in new Hornady cases, Rem 9 1/2 primer, OAL for the Sierras was 2.600 and the Hornadys 2.620
I got an average of 2650 with the Sierra bullet and a little faster with the Hornady. Accuracy was a little better with the Sierras but close...this in a 1960 99F with a skinny 22" barrel. This is an accurate but somewhat finicky rifle. Groups averaged around 1.5" for three shots with the Sierra bullet. Barrel heats up fast and seems to want to stay hot depending on the outside temp. This with a Burris 2.5x20 Fullfield scope.
For Sierra to list 44 g of Varget as max must be really a compressed load but I haven't tried it so don't know for sure
I’ve got a couple older powder profile publications and some have loads for up to 2800-FPS, which I think is nuts. When a 300 Savage starts to get up there then it’s time to consider getting a 308. Or backing loads off to decent 300 velocities.
In the 4 300 Savages i load for (3 model 99s and a model 722) im finding that 2600ish fps is where im getting the accuracy im comfortable with.
Iv'e used RL15, Win 748, IMR 4064, IMR 4895, pushing 150g Speer DC, Sierra sptz, Horn SP, Win ST, Rem RN and it didn't seem to matter. Something between 2550fps and 2625fps seemed to provide the best accuracy and i zero those at 200. None of my loads reached 2700fps and most were in the high 2500fps realm.
Honestly, getting an additional 100 - 150fps didnt matter to me as it doesn't appreciably increase my effective range with the 300.
In fact, in the 2 open sighted rifles, i prefer heavier bullets with a 150yd zero.
From Sierra's Edition V, 7th printing; Federal Cases, Savage Model 11, Barrel length 26" Federal 210 primer 2.600 COAL except for the RN (2.350) for 150 gr. bullets the maximum with Varget is ACTUALLY 44.5 not 44 as I thought and reported earlier in my post above! this is also their recommended hunting load and listed a velocity of 2800 for 2611 fp of energy! (26 inch barrel)
