Well, never mind then. I'll wander off to another BPCR site. SW

Nebrhogger,

I looked for XMP5744 info in regards to another BP cartridge. Unfortunately it isnt available here in Australia. So I had to look to other powders [Alliant 2400 and Reloader 7]. However, do a search at the ASSRA forum. Lots of info there and you may come across exactly what you are after. If not post the question there too. I posted a question there on 5744 and also enquired at MSN BPCR forum... Some of those guys drop in here too. Mike Venturinos Book shooting Lever Action Rifles has many references to 5744 in BP rifles, so there would surely be a good load to work up... Good luck.

cheers.

Cam...

Hogger haven't shot the 43 Mauser, but do shoot the 43 Egyptian , 25 grs of 5744 works pretty well. I've found that ballistically 25 grs of 5744 will give the same( or at least close enough) velocity as 70 grs of 2f . I use alot of 5744 cuz sometimes I'm just to lazy to fiddle with cleaning cartridge cases. If you can find 4227 data you can usually substitute 5744.
Are the Bluffs Shooters doing anything thesedays?
Are you getting ready to shoot the Sagebrush at Alliance in a couple of weeks?

I have two 43's, a 71 and a 71/84. I have found that any load listed for the 45-70 (with the same or very close to the same bullet weight) can be used in the 43 Mauser. But just like any other handloads start low and work up! Hope this helps.

Yup, it IS a BPCR forum, ....and 5744 is valid subject material for same, a legitimate and practical substitute......

Someone appoint you classroom monitor while we were out shooting / building rifles, or what?

Nebraska hogger, dittos on pretty much lateral data transfer, 43 Mauser to .45-70, and please continue to post here.

'scuse me . . . I thought "What is 5744?" was a legit question as it relates to BPCR . . . Did not intend to be a butthead, but it does come naturally at times, even though unintentionally.

Still don't know what 5744 is. Guess nobody else does either.

5744 is a powder marketed by Accurate that works well in older low pressure cartridges (and others as well). You can get a detailed description of it at www.accuratearms.com

Thanks Craigster, I had even gone over to the closest place with powders and other reloading supplies and 5744 wasn't on their shelf nor in their list of powders. The website you posted explains that it "was reintroduced due to popular demand", so it's no wonder it wasn't on the shelf (they have about 65 or 70 powders available) Still haven't been to a BPCR shoot that allows duplex loads, let alone full blown smokeless loads. I do use smokeless in my Marlin 1895 Cowboy and will give some 5744 a try . . . if I can locate some . . .

It's not all that new, I'm pretty sure it's been on the market for a couple years at least.

So, is that powder cool for Sharps rifles? I wouldn't mind once in a while loading something that doesn't stink. The dogs actually love the smell, but I fear they love it too much. The leg humping is distracting while I try to clean the rifle.

Dan , Yes. From my cheap italian junker sharps 25 grs of 5744 behind a 500 or heavier bullet will produce within 10 fps of 68 grs of 2f black with the same bullet, and will shoot into the same group, with no sight setting changes. Accuracy seems to be equal out to 800 or so yards. Your mileage may vary.

You bet, looking forwards to hearing how it works out for you.
Might be you ought to throw 150 or so rounds together and beat feet to Alliance Ne on the weekend of the 25th for the Sagebrush Shoot, so's you can show some of us how they work in your gun.

I'm a full time student right now. Too far to travel on a weekend. But I'm going to give that powder a try.
