You mean like this hat? He said no tassels. Please find another pic without tassels.

I find it interesting that for hundreds of years, hats were sold without a crease. Much like this one... The new owner of the hat then wore and creased the hat to suit their own needs and style. Creasing a hat is a lost art, fading fast... With pre-creased hats virtually in every crease style there is now. Whether straw, palm leaf, or felt, I have always creased my own hats to suit me. In fact, I wouldn't trust anyone else to do it. You can tell at a 1/2 second glance a lot about a man, especially a cowboy, what he is. Just as you can spot a drugstore cowboy from a city block away...

Seems Mother Nature does most of the hat creasing around here! I've lost several straws to wind, and barbed wire fences.

I asked an Iowa State Trooper about the Patrol hats. He said the felt hats have to be turned in to get a new hat.
The straw hats not so. I wish I could remember the brand, not the same, winter, and summer hats.

Barry, is right, you can tell a dude from a mile away by looking at his his hat, I have a couple of felt hats that are over 40 years old, cheap western hats look cheap, and don't hold up with the weather.
Many years ago I broke my leg at the Ft Worth Stock Show. And couldn't travel, Windy Ryon, RYONS SADDLERY, Gave me a job shaping hats, I sat on a stool in the front of the shop and shaped hats and b.s., with the customers, for 3 months, you get to know a little more hats than most people,
The Last Felt hat i bought, I bought from Windy Ryon's Grandson, about 10 years ago. Rio7

Whatever the hat is called in the OP's example, Don Williams was partial to that style.

I try to be particular about my hats and when they start getting shabby I send them off to be rebuilt. Several years ago it cost $75 plus $20 shipping. Now it is approaching $180 to have one rebuilt and a couple I wasn't happy with. I thought I can do this myself. I have shaped lots of hats. Not as many as RIO7 but quite a few. I have taken some off the oldest ones that were pretty well shot and started with them. It is going so so. Tried different things to clean them. Woolite and Dawn detergent seem to work best. Some stains I havent figured out how to remove. Replacing the liners is not that difficult and I use spray adhesive to help them stay in place against the crown. I like a wide ribbon band. Those are hard to sew on without the stitches being visible. Haven't tried replacing a sweat band yet. Overall I would say I still have a lot to learn and progress is slow. Not exactly a roaring success. Maybe it is worth $180.

Getting hats restored has not worked out for me, they never came back with the same feel and didn't hold their shape very well, but then I have way more hats than I need, some people collect boots, spurs, bits, with me its Hats, Saddles and guns. but no one has ever accused me of being smart. Rio7

My "uncle", actually an older cousin, used to go to the farm and feed store in the backcountry of San Diego County CA ( now it's a suburb) and buy Bailey's Roll Your Own straw hats. As I recall, he soaked or steamed them. I was all of a 9 yo "city kid" and was impressed as hell.
Not sure if they're even made anymore

Well then I consider myself in good company. I have quite a few hats myself. This winter I bought a couple of Stormy Kromer caps. I like them. My wife started calling me Elmer and offered to buy me a blunderbus.
