Any thoughts on the ruger hawkeye? Specifically in 308. Are they shooters?

Buy with confidence. Ruger rifles are excellent in my experience with them.

I have one and it seems to shoot pretty good. I did put an aftermarket trigger on it and the stock is a McSwirly, but no new barrels or anything.

Have owned 4 m77s. Never had any issues with any of them. They aren't as "streamlined" as a M70 FWT, but they feel bomb proof.

I've got a Hawkeye, standard wood/blue in 308win. I had a Smith lessen the trigger to 3lbs and bed the action. I shoot factory ammo, 150gr federal blue box for deer and hogs, and federal premium 180gr partitions for elk. Mine shoots great. I've owned several ruger mk2s. All performed great.

I’ve had three; a Predator .308, an AW .243, and an AW .223. All good shooters. All dead reliable.

Giving the Predator to my son. Sold the .243 to finance a mistake. Put a factory walnut stock on the .223 and it’s not going anywhere as long as I can still pull a trigger. Finally hit on a load it really likes, and the SS and walnut are very handsome IMO.

If you can tolerate the weight, the Predator has a fine two-stage trigger.

With the thought that it would be ideal for Blacktail Deer here, wink on the 'wet' coast of B.C. on Vancouver Island, I picked up a full wood/Mannlicher style Ruger M77 Hawkeye RSI Lipsey model in 7x57. Now, smile to get it some field experience this fall.

I had to trim the mag well box on my 3006 before it finally grouped satisfactory.......if the mag box doesn't wiggle a bit it could be too tight and putting undue stress on the action......there's a trim procedure recommendation on the ruger forums for the mag box, if necessary.

Fixed my issues for good.

I have three Hawkeyes, all blued/walnut. They all shot better with a bed, float and trigger job. The two .257 Roberts' shoot under an inch at 100m and the Whelen about 1 1/2 inch. It tends to be a bit lively off the bench and jumps a bit. But good enough for the game I hunt with it, mainly sambar deer. The barrels seem to be very smooth when running a tight cleaning patch up them with no tight spots.

I have a few Ruger 77s, 77 MK2s, and Hawkeyes. The most recent acquisitions are a trio of stainless Hawkeyes in 223, 6.5 CM, and 338 FED that are all bedded in McM Hunter style stocks and set up to have close to the same fit and feel. They shoot fine, but none of them quite as well as their lower cost cousins in the American Rifle Predator line up.

I would buy another one is I felt the urge and the price was right.

We have a Hawkeye in 6.5 Creed with a muzzle brake in Sportsman's where I work part time.
Been there forever with an 1199 price tag. No takers.

His cousins the American Rifles---I can not keep enough on hand.

Id like to find one of the lefty Hawkeye 6.5 stainless wood rifles but i cant seem to. Its odd that locally ive been told by retailers that Hawkeyes are impossible to get and they sell out of the Ruger Americans. Who knows, i may find one down the road but for now im going to be happy i was able to get a Hawkeye in 270 win. Over the moon actually.

II bought a walnut and carbon steel Hawkeye in 338 Federal when Ruger was closing them out with a $50 rebate on an already well priced rifle. I bought it because I have always liked Ruger firearms and think Bill Ruger was a great shot in the arm when USA made guns needed what William had to offer. And also because I wanted a second rifle in hunting camp after some of my friends had broken stocks, broken scopes, permanent fog in the optics. I wanted a rifle with a cartridge that wouldn't be confused with anything else. After just a few shots at the local range I decided the rifle wouldn't spend too much time sitting about camp - shot lights out. Ruger proved investment casting parts was a viable way of making a solid, strong, well designed, classic rifle. I couldn't be happier. The 338 Fed is a good option if you hunt timber country for deer, elk, moose and bear. Just the right amount of knock down power without much meat damage. Not the best over 300 yard boomer though.

I have a stainless Hawkeye in 7mm-08. It's easily a MOA shooter with the only thing I've ever shot much through it - Hornady American Whitetail 139 grain ammo.

I've noticed that whenever I'm headed somewhere rough, or it's nasty out, it's the rifle I grab.

I recently purchased the same rifle in 35 Whelen. It shoots well too and my become my go-to (really) big game rifle.

I have an all-weather Hawkeye in 308 that's been restocked in a nicely figured walnut stock from one of the RCM models. It shoots very well and is a sexy little thing grin
