This thread made my day! It's refreshing to see that others are like myself and struggle to consistently achieve those tiny "internet groups" that so many boast of.
.... Everybody is a crack shot with one of those.

I've had many rifles including three benchrest guns, but have never been fortunate enough to own one of the "all day long" rifles. It looks like the Internet alleged experts bought them all. Dimocrap lieberals bought them.

One of the reasons I don’t shoot at game any further than 400 yards under perfect conditions is I can’t do it. It’s not a gun thing. I have a pre-64 M70 that groups 3-shots from 1 to 1.5 inches at 100 yards from a bench. I can hit milk jugs out to 400 yards when shooting from prone off my pack. I have an M700 that will do 3 inches at 300 yards from the bench. But, I don’t hit jugs any more consistently at 400 than the M70. Sitting off sticks, my limit reduces to 300. Sitting with elbows on the knees, I’m down to 200. Kneeling, 150. Off-hand, 100 yards tops.
Until I get better, throwing money into the rifle doesn’t do me any good. You just need a creek more.

One hole groups are easy peasy all day long...
at 25 yds or so!
When I bought my fist new Ruger M77 MK II, another kid behind the counter told me to shoot a group at 25 yds to begin the sight-in process. So I did. Couldn't for the life of me figure out where the next 2 shots went. So I moved over on the target and tried again. Then it hit me. lol did that only once with the 300 rum at a hundred, one hole, I thought I'd missed but after looking at it up close you could barely tell all three were there.

This target was shot over several months from a 308 Win at 200 yards by a 24CF member and former SF Operator. He wanted to determine how many rounds fired before the barrel would need a cleaning. IIRC he was over 100 rounds on this target. 🦫 Who was it that said more guns are worn out cleaning them, than shooting them

I clean after every outing, I’m a clean freak, but I’ve never gotten a 100+group like that. Good job to that man.

So this is entirely possible, all day long. Many competitors today shoot 5-5 shot groups at 100 yards that measure .150 center to center, or less. And per the rules, when they shoot the 200 yard stage, they measure the groups and divide by 2, to reflect the same MOA value. Many matches today end up with sub .200" aggs for 10- 5 shot groups that are shot over two days from 8AM to around 3PM. The people who do this, have two things, one is a good gun and barrel, but they also have the knowledge to keep the gun in tune from morning to afternoon. And if you think there is no need to change things, you are mistaken.

If my rifle will put 3 shots into an inch and a half at 100 yards and the group is centered where I want it to be, I’m goin’ hunting’...! Ditto - from a bench rest or reasonable imitation. My standards slip a bit when kneeling, standing, or sitting. Yep. Minute of chest on whatever animal I’m hunting, at whatever distance I’m comfortable shooting at, will put meat on the table and horns/antlers on the wall.
Every day on this side of the ground is a win.

I showed up at a F&W range and a dude at 225 had a Stolle Panda. Told him that was a super cool rifle a d he offered me a go. Stuck case first two times so was pulled from cradle. He apologized and made it so I could resume.
5 shots. Half incher.
Pisssd him off. Dont think me telling him I worked under a microscope for a living made him understand.
His rifle and loading was darn good IMHO.
I just watched the flags and touchsd em off when the same LOL....
1 oz trigger, never shot one before. I think maybe 2 oz would suit me. 28 oz used to be a deer trigger AFAIC.
But older, job change, impact ....my sense of touch across the board aint what it was. Never will be.

Varmint rigs at half inch at 100 w handloads is fine by me. Deer rigs at an inch and Im happy. My POS 760 does under 1.5 and i just grin from ear to ear. Sometimes it will do an inch.
Hell, its my 150 yards and in .35 rem.....kill.zone huge at those distances

I do laugh about how good some supposed bone stock 1022 standards are. Or those upgraded w BX triggers.
Never had one do sub half inch ay 50 without bbl change and match ammo. Did have an old fingergroove that did .75 w Blazer w just a Volq hammer swap.
Had two old walnut regs w and wo band and they looked more like extra full choke turkey guns.
Last FG was as bad. No GM sporter bbls to mod into cool tree rat killer, so sold it Got a clunker CZ455 and so far it does well w match ammo. Std V or HV of other and it does not impress. But but but I read they were super awesome. Guess just not for me.

I'm much more impressed with someone who shoots 10 shots in one go into a 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch group than someone who occasionally gets a .5 MOA group with 3 shots. This of course at 100 yd and no flyers dismissed.
3 shots is starting to become the accepted norm because it's much easy to get a tighter group with a small sample.
The all day - every day that people like to tack on to their declaration is also an eye roller.

As one forum member mentioned here several years ago when someone posted a photo of a tiny five-shot group... something to the effect that it's meaningless unless you also include photos of the two five-shot groups before that one and the two after. That would tell us something.

Whenever someone claims that I say, "I'd pay fifty bucks to see that!". Then when they say, "You callin' me a list?", I say "No, I just never seen that and I'd pay to see it.". They usually shut up. Actually, no one has taken the offer. Note, that is " one hole all the time." Once isn't enough. Money talks, bullsh;t walks

A good zero off bags and a bench is needed for shooting under duress, hunting or gun fighting. A good tight zero compensates for deviation outside of "perfect" conditions in shooting form or positions.
Stress fire practice in various ways for hunting or gun fighting also reduces deviation off your zero.
Practice.......
