That's an interesting observation. I found the Toki to be quite mild, but I was drinking a pretty big flavored bourbon before opening this bottle. Glad you like the Suntory, Japanese whiskey sure has taken a while to catch on. It's popular enough now that it's hard to find the better bottles here.
I threw a whiskey night a few months ago and the bottle that everyone went back to was Taketsuru Pure Malt black label. Very good stuff. Just poured a glass since I was thinking about it.

I'm sipping some Tomatin 12 year old single malt. It's not all that special but it'll do as a digestif and accompaniment for my cigar.
OTOH the cigar is pretty damn good. It's a well aged El Rey del Mundo Rectangulare in maduro in my favorite size, basically a box pressed Lonsdale. Even though I recently bought a box of rather large ring gauge cigars I've mostly been swimming against the ever larger ring gauge tide in cigars for several years now.

I agree in general but I think it depends on the cocktail and on the whiskey. I don’t think an old fashioned benefits as much from something really good like a Vieux Carre or Sazerac might. The thing about the Rusty Nail is the peat is a key player and the rich Lagavulin peat is awesome. Also Lagavulin 8 is kind of an outlier... on the one hand it’s a $60 bottle of whisky and as a stand-alone is worth that... but comparatively it’s an 8 year old whisky and their lowest offering. It really kicks the cocktail up a notch. But it would still be a shame to use the whole bottle for cocktails

Still, Johnnie black isn’t peaty enough now that I sold Lagavulin 8 to the devil of cocktails. What would be a cheaper alternative? Takisker Storm perhaps. Didn’t Ardbeg come out with a cheaper NAS bottle? Ardbeg does have Wee Beastie out now. A 5 year old, but the price locally is up with the Ten. Conamara peated Irish isn't bad at $39 or so.

I like the Wee Beastie. I like the Ten a little better, but locally I found the Wee Beastie at Costco at a great price and bought a half-dozen. They sold out fast.
BTW, Joe Biden can burn in hell, but he did lift Trump's 25% tariff on single malt scotch - at least for a few months - and Lagavullin 16 has dropped locally from $99 to $74, practically overnight. (Trump is tea total, IIRC.)
