It appears that I've drawn a sheep permit for Wyomings area #2. Does anybody have any sage advice about the ins and outs of this area. I would just as soon not hire a guide, I've spent more time hunting than most of the guides and I've seen and been in on more sheep kills than some outfitters entire crew. Has anybody on this board hunted sheep in this area?
Thank you in advance.

No advice here, but congrats! I was wanting to put in for a sheep tag in MT, but due to deplyment, I missed the cutoff. Now I'm just hoping to be home in time for deer season. I'd say maybe next year, but Uncle Sam is making move again. Damn, just when I start liking MT! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I took a nice 9 1/2 year old, 7/8 curl, heavily broomed ram from this area several years ago.

Hardware used = Rem. 700 7MM Mag., 4X Redfield scope, 154gr Hornady spire point. 10X binocs, 20X spotting scope.

Started scouting area in mid August, season started 1st of September. Every weekend was a 3-day or 4-day hunt as employer was flexible and I lived in Powell but worked in Cody. Killed ram next to last weekend in October. Also had drawn a moose tag that year for south of Y-stone but didn't fill it, never saw a bull which is what my tag was for. When I left the moose hunt area there was 26" of snow on the ground from a 3-day storm.

The hunt = drove to hunt area arriving at 7AM. Unloaded saddle horse and pack mule, rode 1.5 miles from truck/trailer. Spent hour or so using spotting scope on mtn side. Saw ram already bedded down around 9:30AM. Stalked on foot to shooting position until 12:30.

The final minute = 254 yards bedded down, from a prone position, one shot, racking angle left rear paunch to right front shoulder, through the heart, ram ran about 100 yards up a avalanche shoot, second shot from standing position hit in the back of left horn (no damage) turned ram back the way he came. Third shot was a miss as rifle fired as ram was disappearing into trees. Ram made 75 yards of dry wash downhill and fell dead.

I never have put in for another sheep permit, kinda imposed a once-in-a-lifetime limit on myself as I felt others should have the same opportunity I had.

Email or PM me to dicuss this further.

Oh yeah, I didn't use a guide either.

Elkslayer, now someone will pipe up and tell you that you should have used a .300 something or another, instead of that puney 7mm. How did the bullet perform? Nice job and a definite hunt of a lifetime. Let's see some pics. Flinch

Yeah, Flinch I agree!

I coudda used my .30 caliber spitzenfireloudenboomer or my 338 earspliztenkickzenhard but I was afraid I'd outshoot that premium scope I owned!!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Not to mention those cheap wimpy bullets I used which have accounted for 10 or 12 elk, a few deer and a stupid songdog or two.

Would like to say I recovered the bullet but never found it even though there was only an enterance hole and no exit hole. Guess at the time recovering the bullet wasn't that important to me. It had done its job. Come to think about it, I could retrieve the one in the left horn, it's still there! Nice 7mm bullet hole right in the center of the back of the curl.

I live in Area 2... area 2 is my back yard... tell me a little about yourself and I'll see what I can do for you. I'll be honest I have some reservations about "giving" out information to those that live out of state and come here to hunt and do not want to hire a guide. Most of your guides that do it for sheep know more than you think. A guy wouldn't say he's a sheep guide if he wasn't worth his salt.... gotta be careful what ya say about us "young" Wyoming guides... just cause you've hunted more doesn't necessarily mean you know more or are a better hunter...

I know where there are no less than 4, 7/8th rams and 2 full curls and thats just one band. It is only few miles from my ranch.

Area 2 is kinda tricky .. the big rams arn't where you think they should be... but.. ... well... hmmm..

why don't ya tell me about yourself..

OK, I'm a honest, fun-lovin' feller who respects the lord an' loves his country. I'd love to hunt sheep with you, as long as we do it afor this shrapnel in my good leg starts settin' up with arthritis, like the one with the communist bullet in it did. I lived near unit 2 fer a while, but my charity work took me to this part of the state. Sure, I make much less money now, but the chilrin make it all worth while. When do we go?

Hmm..not sure if you're pokin' fun at me or not... The areas in #2 that I hunt arn't for the light hearted.. but they have very, very nice rams in 'em. I'm bettin' that your leg woudn't lat real long.
I only wish I was lucky enough to draw a tag... Not sure what parts of #2 you stomped around in.. but you should know where these rams are....

I was teasin'. I couldn't draw if my life depended on it. When I started puttin' in for sheep, it only took 4 points to have a good chance. Now, 6 points will git you a 14% chance. As my points go up, so does the bar. Ain't nuthin' wrong with my legs, 'cept thet they got fat this winter. Gonna start ridin' a bike soon as the dam snow stops! We got 3 inches las' night an' its snowin' cats an' dogs right now. You gettin' any of this?

Wyowhisper. You have reservations about giving out info to nonresidents. Hell you're nothing but a nonresident yourself that migrated a few years ago from pennsylvania. Your ranch is nothing but a dude ranch, where you tell warm and fuzzy campfire tales. Not to mention you've entered the guide business,so its no wonder you believe in using a guide. Tell the guy the truth. He's got a once in a lifetime tag at stake.

Mule,

Yup we're getting this stuff too.. ahhhh the joys of spring..

Dude,

boy oh boy are your panties in a bunch. Glad to see ya know alot about me..you sound a little jealous...
"nothing but a Dude ranch " .. you're right I have a "dude" ranch never claimed to have more, Dude...... sorry you feel the need to demoralize what I have.. I have 33 deeded acres with permits to access and use 500,000 acres, what you got??

Yes, I do guide and have for the past 7 years. I used to hunt this area for alot of years long before I moved here.... I was one of those guys who thought I could do it all.. but I never hunted this area as a non-resident without a guide.

I earn part of my living guiding.... I spend alot of time in the hills and have learned alot of "secrets" and I am NOT willing just to go telling them....and not to just anyone... would you?

To tell the truth I wouldn't want to hunt this guy.. not with his " I've seen and done it all" attitude... I would be willing to share some info. If he is an honest upstanding guy...

Just a little respect goes a long way... just my .02

He does have a once in a lifetime tag but the best way to get some good honest info. ain't to be boasting and insulting....

Ok Dude, unruffle your shorts and take a deep breath...

500,000 acres of lease, that isn't yours and more then likely belongs to the public. You better just stick with the 33acres you actually own.

Hey Dude,

I can only guess you are not from the west or you wouldn't call yourself "Dude" basically "Dude" out here is an insult...

The 500,000 isn't public at least to a non-resident. I have Places in Casper and Sheridan as well as access to the Washakie Wilderness.

The 33 I own is pasture, pond and areas for our private cabins.

sorry to burst your bubble....Dude

P.S. You never answered my questions.... If you spent your time learning the hills, secrets and you made part of your income from guiding would you offer all the information???

The problem is wyowhisper, you have to go on the assumption you actually know the land and wilderness. Which is one hell of an assumption.

Dude,

Look dude,.... I learn stuff everytime I venture into the hills.. hell everyone out here does... When I stop learning, I'll be dead...But I know as much as needed to produce for my hunters the quality of animals they are after. I do not assume anything but I go above and beyond what I get paid for and what I am asked to provide.

I'll tell you what, If you know more or can do it better, I'll supply the horses and pack animals and I'll pay you by the hour to show me how it's done...

Ya still didn't answer my questions.... but I am not supprized... dude...
