He makes it too complicated. The way it used to be done was to pound a capped pipe in the ground until it's level, fill it with powder, stick in a fuse and set the anvil on top. He probably gets more altitude but the old way gets more shots off in the same amount of time. One thing that's important is have the anvil sitting level so it doesn't get tossed the wrong direction.

It was a standard 4th of July event for generations before fireworks were readily obtainable.
If done right, the anvil will make a loud ringing sound from the concussion.

We used to make cannons out of pipe and powder, but I've never been bored enough to do that. Anvils are probably safer though.

The first time I saw an anvil launched into the air, it was done by a coyote in the Arizona desert trying to catch a road runner.

I wonder if kids today would even know what a pea shooter was? Having a local zoo where the animals slept all day, made them essential.
