Case is long for that, as measured... kinda looks right though...

Maybe 30 short

On second thought, it might be a 32 long with a hollow base bullet.

This guy says that Remington's 32 RF bore diameter was .304.

I seem to remember “cartridges” for a toy gun that looked like that. In those the “bullet” was aluminum and I don’t remember if the case was brass or plated aluminum.
Tap on the bullet with something steel and see if it’s actually lead.

I think navlav is right. Looks just like a 1950s Mattel toy bullet. You put green sticky caps on them and POW.

I think you guys nailed it. Case looks like plated steel or aluminum.
Magnetic?

I thought those had a plastic bullet with a split in the rear of the bullet and the case had a spring in it. Put a little greenie stickum cap on it and when it went bang the plastic bullet was propelled by the spring. I may be misremembering though. It was a couple of years ago.

I had a "gun", a Colt cap-and-ball revolver lookalike, that shot a cartridge that looked like that, but it was a hollow soft plastic bullet and the case head had a vent hole through which the blast from the cap would propel the bullet at about 40fps. I don't think it was a Mattel, and the gun was made of plastic too and didn't last long in my 7 year old hands - not that it mattered because I remember losing all the bullets pretty quickly making the pistol a cap-firing blank shooter.

That’s right. The Mattel “shootin’n shells” had a brass colored case with a captured spring in it. The plastic bullet had a split projection on the base and little plastic lugs that gripped the mouth of the case when tail of the bullet was pressed down into the case. You could put one of the stick on caps on the base but it just made the “pow” and wasn’t involved in bullet propulsion; that was provided by the spring in the case. There was no flash hole to allow the cap’s blast to propel the bullet. Pretty lame but it was pretty cool at the time. 😀
Pretty good for shooting plastic toy soldiers, though.
If the OP’s “cartridge” shown is what I think it is, the “cartridge” wasn’t a “Shooting shell”, just a cartridge to load the gun. I just can’t remember the toy gun it was made to fit.

Well this is embarrassing as hell. As many of you have suggested, it's a toy! I never thought to weigh them.

There were 3 different cartridges together in the box. One was a . 38 Short Colt and it weighed 175gr. There was also a .32 Short that weighs 100gr. The cartridge of unknown origin is halfway between the two in size yet it only weighs 59gr.

I would have to agree with the consensus that this is a toy round from Mattel. Wow, what a surprise that is!

The round looks exactly like this...
