I went down and checked the s/n of my newest manufactured 99C,and lowest s/n of one of my 1895.s. The 99C i have is F941470 made in Feb 2001, the highest s/n i have referance to being made is G021681. March of 2002. My lowest s/n 1895 is 3603 ,but my understanding the first 1895's shipped were in the 5000 s/n range. I think Rick 99 has this pretty well documented and i have one of the first of these made. So now the number search can begin!!!!!

Yeah, there's a difference in the 1895's as far as serial number and shipping order. The lowest and highest serial numbered rifles were probably shipped in the middle, and the middle serial numbers were shipped first and last. SN 5000 (some early 5000’ish serial numbers) and a few others were accepted in October, 1895. Mass shipping started in Feb, 1896. In general, shipping seems to have gone from 5,000 to 8200 - then from low 3,156 up to 4,999. If I have that wrong, Joe or Rick will correct me. So the high 4,000's were shipped last probably in spring, 1897 - but there were a lot of "earlier" rifles that shipped late also. One guy on Facebook had a low 4,000 serial numbered gun that shipped in September, 1898 - almost surely an unfinished gun from Marlin that Savage Arms finished. For lowest 1895, I have 3171 - only 15 higher than the lowest in the ledger. Poor thing needs a new stock though. For highest 1895, I had 8062 in my hands but shipped it back due to bad tang crack/varnish. Lowest 1899 - I have 10.16x Highest 99 - 1992 Llama is the only high one I have left. I had a 1999 in 300 Savage.

What was the the first rifle in the ledger? Callahan once said the ledger starts at 1000, I believe. But it didn’t sound like they were filled in with data. 3156 is the lowest one with data.

For what it's worth, I have an 1895 with serial number 8190. The barrel is JM marked and the stock serializes 8190 as well.

There are half a dozen 1895's or so that are logged over SN 8200 in the ledgers, but they are out of order and Callahan didn't know why they were numbered so oddly.

You need a historian letter. Cody has the record books. I'm not sure they know where to look for 1895's. I was on the way to Cody this morning to help them with the log books but had to turn back. A blizzard closed South Pass. THAT'S RIGHT, A DAMN BLIZZARD!!!!!!

They may not know the difference between an 1895 and 1899, or an 1899 and 99 - but they know which ledgers to look in for different serial numbers. The ledgers go in serial number order.

My lowest 1895 is 3278, it’s got a 20” barrel but everything numbers correctly. Looks like it was used as a saddle gun the forearm has been sanded down almost smooth. I’ve got a 99c that is D066832 in 22-250, shoots great!

I'm on the hunt for a 1895 bolt assembly and a peep sight that was attached to the wood, just behind the tang of an 1895. I have a photo that I can email if possible. TIA

Blackdragon, I don't happen to have any spare parts for the 1895 savages,i have been asked a few times recently about the sight also. I would not have any idea where to find one.I believe there as rare as hens teeth. Good luck with your search.Don

Anyone happen to have a picture?

Anyone happen to have a picture? Some of the 1895's came with a peep sight that screwed into the wood behind the tang. Advertised in the 1895 catalog maybe? Savage rifles were brand new, special tang sights hadn't hit the market yet.

I have some pics of an 1895 with the stock mounted sight and two of my special order 1895's have the holes for it. The pics will be in my new book. I can't compromise the new book by posting the pics before the book comes out.
