Help me understand how the gun world sees things please as I may be looking at things all wrong. Have been dealing with a great couple guys on trying to buy a gun. I nicer gun. 1000$+. They have very nice guns pretty well as new, but no original box. While it doesn't really effect the deal, I feel it may effect price but I don't know if it does. How do you folks feel about this. Does original box adjust price ?

Sometimes for some people. Orig. box and paper never hurt a sale.

To me a box is always nice with a new production gun as it tells me the gun was likely either babied or at least well cared for. As for adding value it really only matters to me if the rifle is being bought with collector value in mind. Then, when it comes to vintage, rare, or old rifles, the box starts to really add value in a lot of cases. How much depends on the specific gun and specific box.

Any modern rifle that can still be bought new, I don’t consider the box worth value - but is a welcomed addition.

I don’t care about boxes for guns (factory or custom) that retail for less than $1500 or so.

Depends on what it is. Collectible - affects price. Common gun - doesn't affect price. I've never not bought a gun just because it didn't have the original box. But I think it's easier to sell a gun if the original box is included.

Well said, 257.
That's how I view it, as well. It never hurts.

Yep, as 257 said..... for me, only if it were something very collectible. I tried for years to keep all the boxes. I finally gave up, who has room for all those empty boxes!??!?!?!?! smile
I kept a few of the ones for nicer ones, like a S&W 44 mag Bear Tracker, Ruger Single Action Army black powder, etc.

Whether you tell yourself you CAN do it.... or you CAN'T.... you're correct.

long guns, keeping box's is a problem when you get to 100+, I doubt that you will find many original bx's for 100 yr old guns, BUT, never say never

I agree however if you DID find a 100 year old gun with the original box I suspect it will command a premium price.

I call dibs on anything pre-64 Winchester, especially model 70's.

I ran across an early 4-digit Ruger No. 1 25-06 as part of an estate my brother and I bought. Had the original 2-Pc box with end label, rings, manual, etc. It went for a little over $3K on Gunbroker. My understanding is that it would have been worth much less without the box.

Thank goodness the buyer had a Ruger collector friend pick it up so I didn’t have to ship it.

I keep all boxes. Get a contractor bag and it holds a bunch. Put it in attic and open and slide new boxes in.

Who gives a [bleep]. It's cardboard. I don't have room to store boxes all over. Most guys who demand boxes are anal weirdos who aren't even going to shoot the damn gun.

Retaining a gun box is a must if your gun is a collectible. It will also give a buyer an impression that you value your guns and take care of them, therefore making them appear more valuable and will get you more $ if you sell one.

Having or not having a box does not influence my opinion on how well a person has taken care of a gun.

I have made quite a few bucks picking up empty handgun boxes and shotgun cases at sales. Love picking up Beretta, Benelli, etc, shotgun cases for $10 , especially the ones that rattle when you shake them,.
