Carried a 220 my entire career. IMO it’s the finest fighting gun around. Can’t wear one out, accurate, DA/SA is the cats ass.
Have a sig ultra compact 1911 in .45. Love it but have heard that some guns are finicky due to the steep ramp angle. I haven’t experienced that but be aware of it. I had a few malfunctions during the first 200 rounds (I consider that the break in period) but none since and I’ve put many 1000’s of rounds down range with it.

Love my Sig 1911. Shoots like a dream. Only wish it wasn't a model 80 type.

Have owned both...As you noted, both are not a light carry rig.
1911 is a smidge less bulky to carry. Accuracy was perfect out of the box with my XO 1911. I had to drift the sights on both P220 I’ve owned.
Question is your comfort level with a single action vs. double/single action weapon.
Quality firearms, either way.

Have the Sig 1911 Stainless Target. Have had no feeding problems of any kind with cast bullets or factory. I cast the Lee 452-200SWC, 452-200RF, and 452-230TC and it eats them all without fail. I did have Doug (cylindersmith) throat and polish the barrel.

It depends on what you prefer and are used to. I've got a SIG full size 1911, left me by my Dad, he bought it after my screams at him not to buy Kimbers (Ryan Busse, VP of Sales, is a commie gun traitor, since departed the company) finally sunk in. I souped the trigger for Dad, couldn't get the last out of it because of the 80 interlocks, but it's still close to perfect. I've not fully wrung it out, fully tested it, but it's been stone reliable and "accurate enough." But I'm a 1911 controls guy from the very beginning. If I had any kind of DA SA craving or experience, I might lean 220. I have shot a couple and they drilled right in, just not my preference.

A 220 in 10mm would be a good choice.

I cannot speak to Sig 1911's but one of our local departments carries the 220 and they use our range for quals/ traing. From what I have seen on our range the 220's are solid an reliable pistols. They are safe also,I saw a recruit have what we believe was over charged case casing was spit and wedged in the chamber of the gun ( fed american eagle 230 gr ball ammo) blow up in his hand. The gun was ruined due to frame damage, but the recruits hand was fine, Just a small cut and scratch where the grip blew out. So, in my view they are solid guns that run very well. That one instance is the only issue I have seen with the 220 and that was ammo related. I would own one if one were to present itself at favorable price at favorable time.

Boils down to personal preference on grip and trigger, doesn’t it? Have a 226 with trigger job and srt trigger; shoots like the go fast go hard gun it is. Terrific pistol; I assume the 220 could be made to run the same. But if don’t need mag capacity, i’d still pick the 1911 every time. It’s just that much more natural feeling imo. Like a favorite working knife or old jeans.
Has anyone ever faulted the functioning of the sig rendition? Never heard of one, anyway.

I have two SIG 1911s. A full size Tac Ops and a compact RCS. Very nice 1911s, full featured at a decent price. I which I had not bought a rail 1911 though.

Whatever feels best in your hand. Hard to screw up either way, IMO.

The Sig 220 is the penultimate "Sig type" semi auto, so it is the cat's meow. There are many 1911's, (which is my favorite "heavy .45ACP) but the Sig would not be in my top three choices of the Browning design. To me it is your choice of action.

Ive got both. The Sig 1911s have consistant feed issues and none have been ultra reliable. The Sig P220 otoh has been stellar and absolutely reliable. Ive tuned the trigger on my and its easy to usebDA/SA. Overall its no contest my P220 has been far more reliable than any 1911 ive had reguardless of make or branding.

I had a 220 for a while. I thought the light frame and heavy slide made for a lot of muzzle-flip.
Admittedly I'm a handgun neophyte AND I loathe handgun recoil to-boot.
