It is breezy, we got some snow last night, it's the kind of cold right now that eats into you, even after you've gotten used to winter. Really penetrating. The snow was a good thing because I heard it helped the Blackfeet.

Terrible wind out of the northwest. You cant even speak when you face into it. Sounds like you are choking on a schnitzengrüben. Well, that's why they named the town 'Chinook' right? It's windy here too but the Leg is in session and there's lots of hot air in town...

It blew my wheel line up against an electric fence, trapping a calf between the pipe and the fence. Thank goodness it wasn't one of the horses or it would have been a real cluster. Luckily the calf didn't panic at all.

It was a couple months ago now but we had a stash of 30" culvert 'disappear'.
Blew across a 40 acre hay field and stopped on the fence.
I had a calf shelter delivered this morning and was glad to see it show up before the wind kicked in. Mighta got a little squirrelly on the trailer.

Sam: 1minute, do you run cows? Retired now, but outfit I used to work with runs around 350 hd (Hereford/Angus presently heavy to Angus). Still run to the shop about every other day to help out if needed, as it was a good bunch to work for. Yes, it's easy to lay out smaller free standing stacks, but one tends to maximize use of open ended barns and pole barns for his quality stuff. One tries to keep a well manicured buffer around such, but airborne embers and windblown patties easily traverse barren ground. Outfit responsible for yesterday's burn is a larger family cow/calf unit with I'd guess about 1,500 hd. About 5 neighboring properties were affected, and most are fine neighbors understanding and in the past even responsible for such. The source might be held responsible for replacing some wood post fencing, but standing forage loss was minimal with pastures being mostly last year's stubble. Can't speak to the dually and 5th wheel trailer load though. He actually started 7 or 8 spot fires before realizing his load was going up. Those, however, each consumed less than an acre. Funny that few of us actually knew of yesterday's events as we can typically see the ground from here. With our winds coming out of the west, they were carrying dust and ash from last years regionally scaled Oregon Cascade burns, and visibility was down to about 1/4 mile. On a normal day it's about 75 miles and fires are quite obvious. Have a good one,

Jim, I went to a high spot and ripped a nice big wet one an hour or so ago. Let me know if and when it smacks your nose.
