Why not a 1-4 set on 1x? The 4x will come in handy at the range.

The 1x scopes are actually 1.5x. !x will appear smaller to the person looking through it, 1.5x you see what the unscoped eye sees.
Any of the variables 1x4 or 1.5x5 etc would suit, and as others say the 4 or 5 x would be good at the range.
However, the 1.5x5 Leupold I had, you could see the barrel at 1.5x, bump it up to 2-2.5x and the view of the barrel disappeared.

That’s what I’m wondering, it’s specifically 1x. I’m thinkin a guy would get a ticket with a variable

. +1 on this I think some of the red dot or Holo sights might be a true 1x, but as Axtell pointed out most scopes start at 1.5x. Even these can show a lot of barrel and the front sight, which with both eyes open and for fast shooting I can live with. But the variables are nice to crank up just slightly to eliminate this if it distracts you.

So your saying my 1x Weaver is a 1.5x? That is what Weaver spec says a 1x, do things look smaller with the scoped eye compared to the unscoped eye?. Most variables are 1:3 zoom on the low end , with some higher power scopes 1:4 zoom , so a 1x5 is really a 1.5x4.5, 6x24 is a 4x zoom.

Weaver made a 1x(K-1),1.5x(K-1.5), 2.5x(K-2.5) and 3x(K-3) in straight tube scopes and the variable 1.5-4.5 (V-4.5) and later a 1-3x(V-3). The K-1's were to meet certain state zero magnification rules for MZL seasons. I still run a couple of K-1.5's on rifles set up for close in deer hunting one a German drilling and the other a Sav 99 in 375 Win.. They work ust fine out beyond 100 yards, target shown is at 100 yards.

Most variables are 1:3 zoom on the low end , with some higher power scopes 1:4 zoom , so a 1x5 is really a 1.5x4.5, 6x24 is a 4x zoom. That may have been true 20 years ago. Higher end scopes now have 5X, 6X, 8X and even 10X zooms. The proper LPVOs usually had true 1X. So there are 1-4-X. 1-6X, 1-8X and some 1-10X. They will all have an objective lens diameter between 24-28mm; that's dictated by the true 1X at the low end.
