All:

Just bought a brand new vehicle for the better half. I live in the north with salt on the roads. But I read a lot that modern vehicles are much better at stopping corrosion. So trying to determine if this is worth the additional $.

What I have read basically breaks down into three categories.

1. It’s worth it.
2. It’s worth it only if you get it done a certain way.
3. It’s a waste of money, and basically a scam done by dealers.

If you know about this topic, please chime in.

Thank you

Compare used car prices of relatively newer models in your area compared to salt free areas. If there's a big price difference, there's your answer.

Compare the price of the coatings and the decline in value should it get rusty to a used "winter vehicle" .

I knew more than one person in NW PA that did just that. Had a winter car and the nice one stayed in the garage until May. Friend there even bought a Vette, because he always wanted one, knowing he could only drive it half the year at most.

Or, in my case, I didn't have money and our cars were bordering on "scheidtbox" classification anyway, good running but crappy body looks. If they were driven, they went to the car wash every week and got as thorough a spraying as $5 in the machine would get at $1 or so a pop.

New cars are not bare metal. They are sealed just fine at the factory. It's been a few years, but it's a dealer scam that used to cost them about $30 & they charged you $800. I worked at new & used car dealers for 30 years. The only new car I ever paid for rustproofing was a '79 Blazer. when I lived in northern PA. It started rusting around the plugs for the fooking holes they cut to spray the schdit where it didn't need to go in the door sills under the kickplate trim. Nothing else I owned ever rusted like that. Dont let them do it to you.

Buy a couple of cans of good quality rustproofing spray and do it yourself. Spray inside the door wells, nooks and crannies.....

If one really wanted it, aftermarket is probably better and less costly.

not sure I'd do it to a new car but I do it myself to my old beaters. I use Por 15 or some variation of it, just prep the car and spray it on with an air paint sprayer.

I'm not going for style points though so everything underneath gets sprayed - shocks, muffler pipe, brake lines....probably not the best approach but definitely the cheapest.

I also bought an undercarriage cleaner that connect to my pressure washer for $40 of ebay. The downside to that is using your water hose in the winter

first thing is ,never buy a new car or truck. 2 yrs old and save a bundle.
2nd,buy what ever you can pay cash for,no payments ever.

3rd,do one and 2 you'll be able to afford to spend money on it for stupid things like undercoating.

oh 4th,run it til the wheels fall off. if maintained well you should get 200,000 to 300,000 out of anything you buy.

RAS, I had our last two vehicle Fluid Filmed, which I believe does a much better job of protecting as it doesn't dry out and crack, peel off.
