Dodge slant 6 mo better, run on 1 quart of oil. 318 was tough mutter too . Had the slanted six in a old green pickup . Lived in an old civil war house at the time , doctors home . Brick was three deep , cielings 8-9 ft high , three warm morning stoves and a Kerosun heater in the bathroom . Burned a full pickup load a week . In one year the old dodge didn’t have enough azz to take off Hauled a shiit load of wood that winter . Plus driving 120 miles a day to work . Kenneth

Years ago my dad bought a retired county roads pickup. Mid '80's, paid less than $1k.
Yellow orange 2wd F250, regular cab of course. It was our farming, fuel rig.
POS had an electrical short and I was stranded 2-3 times before I said F this bullchit.
One time it wouldn't start at the gas pump. Local guy I knew pulled up to give me a jump and the kid working in the store ran out saying you can't do that next to the pump. Okay, drag the POS off to the side and hook it up.
Wasn't the engines fault but I sure as hell don't miss that pickup.

I have a 1972 Ford F 250 4x4 with a 300 6cyl and a 4 speed with a granny gear. Planning on restoring it one of these days.

They had an inline 6 for decades.
The 300 CID.
I loved those engines. They were great engines. Huge amount of torque. My father had a 79 F-150 with the 300 6 and that was a 4 wheeling demon. If he hadn't rolled it I doubt he would have ever let it go. I bought a new 1979 F-150, 4 WD, 4 speed with the 300 engine. Pulling sonofagun, but that motor was toast at less than a 100,000 miles. Put another one in it, and it lasted only a couple of years, while the third motor wasn't much better. The whole truck was a lemon, worst Ford I have ever owned. I'd have traded it off if I could have afforded to. I was using on the farm, and it got some very hard use, I'll have to admit that much.

I had a 96 F150 single cab 4x4 with a 5spd, manual hubs, vinyl floors, limited slip at both ends, and the 300 I-6. Was the last year for the 300. Bet that truck is still working somewhere . My dad and his buddy bought a pair of 88s just like this, one blue and one maroon. Last time I saw the maroon one it had 488k on it, motor was pretty tired and it needed a clutch but it was still going.

I had an 84 F250, bare bones - other than 4WD. Driving at 5 - 8000 ft altitude. When it dropped to 15 mpg, it was time for a tune-up. Typically got 17 - averaging in full loads of electrical boxes, conduit, and wire - running empty on the return.

I loved those engines. Yep! The one pickup I had with it was a tough SOB.

My grandpa had several, but his 68 had over 660 k on it when he sold it sometime in the late 80's early 90's. 4 speed manual.

I had 2 buddies with 1979 Fords with the straight 300 6, great motor and lots of power. For a 6 in a pickup I would take the GMC 305 V6. Lots of power and built to last.

Had an 80 f150 with the pos 5 speed. Put a quarter million on it. Would get 20mpg on relatively flat roads. Wouldn't go fast up hill. Would start at the bottom of the river on I17 in Black Canyon City, AZ, floor it up to 75 to 90 and was barely making 55 at the first top flat road. Barely 50 for the last short steep climb to Sunset Point even with another running start. Then got the old man's 92 F150 with fuel injection, could blast up the same hills as fast as I wanted. Loved the old 1980. Went all over Arizona in the west with four little boys in the camper sticking their heads through the cab back window crawl through.
300 six, 7 main bearings, easy to work on.
Old guy, old guns.

I loved those engines. Those engines were OUTstanding.. Plenty of torque, reliable as a Timex, and cheap to maintain... Of course, that was before all the gov't mandated BS....

I loved those engines. I had a pickup with the 300's predecessor, the 240. It was the same engine but with a shorter stroke and 20 less HP. It was every bit as reliable as the 300 if you didn't need the extra horses. That said, I sure wished that I'd had the 300 when I had a trailer behind it.

supposedly something like 500 horse........ BMW is getting 500hp from a 3.0L I-6 with turbos in the M4. I could see a 4-4.5L version for truck use that would make big torque. BMW is already at close to 480ft lbs with that 3.0L. Ford is over 500ft lbs in their truck line of Ecoboost 3.5L V-6 engines. I could see the appeal in losing some moving parts with the inline versus the Vee setup, provided you have enough engine bay for the longer block of the inline.
Now with even more aplomb

I am a Noelle Performance Tuning Dealer, and our software package bumps the M4 from 431hp stock to 560hp, and 520 ft/lb of torque. All software, no bolt on's. Similarly, the 2018 and on M5 package increases hp from 617 stock to 850, and torque to 740 ft/lbs. Some manufacturers leave a lot on the table, others don't.

I still have a 300 six in a 89 ford ,f 250. The cam to distributor gear is worn, and need to replace the cam. 286, 000 miles. I also had a couple slant 6 dodges. They collapsed lifters faster than you could replace them. And stock wouldn't pull the hat off your head. My 85 shortbox 4 x 4, dodge slant six, was a great woods rig. Just didn't plan on hauling a heavy load and you were fine. 70,000 miles and four sets of lifters! I haven't considered a gas dodge since!
