Easier, cheaper, better, etc to build your own with pieces rather than buy one?

Perhaps easier for guys on a budget, as the expense can be portioned out over time by grabbing a part here and there when on sale.

For similar quality parts, buying or building are similar costs.
Pro with building is you get exactly what you want; Con is, it's re-sale value is generally not as high as a built upper, by a recognized company/builder, unless you get a buyer that is knowledgeable & you haven't screwed anything up.

Make sure you have a torque wrench for the barrel nut and a receiver rod or something similar to hold the barrel in place as you torque it down.

Gas block and tube...? Those seem more complicated. I hear guys talking overgassed and undergassed etc

Assembling a AR15/10 upper is no more mechanically complex than assembling a lower for the same. You WILL need the proper wrench for the barrel nut, a decent sized bench vice, and a receiver block to keep from damaging/twisting the upper receiver in the vice, while torquing the barrel nut down.

I have the tools to do both an upper and lower. Both are easy peasy.
