I read an article the other day that advised to check your modem/router's "End of Life" support date to be sure of the latest security fixes and such. Imagine my surprise to learn that I've had my old router since 2015 and it is looooong out of support. Ordered a new Netgear unit - they have routers ranging from $60 to $600 and the cheapest one not only seemed to meet my needs but got the best customer reviews.
Got it and installed it yesterday. Have not changed the cable modem yet (that may be next) but my download speed literally doubled with the new Wi-Fi router, from 25 to 50 Mbps. I use Comcast on copper cable; they don't plan to upgrade my neighborhood to fiber unless the cable fails, they say. That's moot for me because 25 Mbps were fine and 50 will be gravy. But wow what a difference.
So...look up your own modem/router and see what it's EOL date is. If you are past it, you aren't getting the security updates you should and it is time to upgrade. I can hereby vouch for the Netgear AC1000 (R6080 - 100 NAS) as an affordable unit for Wi-Fi.

I changed the thread title to avoid woodworking confusion. I do so little woodwork that it never occurred to me.

Comcast just supplied us with a new internet router, better wi fi, for starters.
My Craftsman router is over 40 years old, still works fine. But it ain't up to snuff on security issues and could use a few new router bits?

I also have an old Craftsman router. It still works as good as ever but it's always been very hard to adjust the depth.

quick test
take the cable that is going into the "internet" port of your router and plug it into the ethernet port of your computer so your feeding straight from the cable modem to the computer
then go to speedtest.net, click on the go button and it will show you a pretty accurate reading of what your internet speed is
mine is 200 at the modem, but distributed over the mesh network I have, it caps at 50mps

Is your mesh network only a single band system? If the access point are hard wired back to the modem or switch you should get 200mps

Its an ASUS router system.

Thanks for the tip, Rocky. Just ordered one. My Linksys went EOL 5/14. Hmmmm. Time for an upgrade.

I have an AT&T router for DSL through the phone line, cable is not an option. I may e-mail and tell them it's time for a new one and see what they say

I always chuckle at the guys who complain that "50 megs sucks" or "200 megs suck". If you have 3 TV's streaming 4K simultaneously, you're likely only drawing 45 ish mbps. How much speed is enough? I had 10 meg for a long time, and could stream 3 TV's at standard def while surfing the web at the same time with no problems.
BTW, I'm a network technician for an ISP, and part of my job is monitoring bandwidth usage for backhaul circuits, to see if we need to make upgrades. We have hundreds of customers with 1 Gig internet that never go over 20 megs at any given time.

It would be a bit inconvenient to haul my desktop over to the router to get an ethernet speed test. Yes, it would be faster, but...
