I was 8 when Elvis broke out. I remember when the Beatles were on. My mother just couldn't get over how long their hair was. Within a year every school kid in the country had hair that long...except us athletes. Coaches didn't allow it for years to come.

I watched that show as a kid, before it went off the air. That Elvis clip was on years before I was born, but Ed was on till I was 10. Amazing run.

Remember the first Beatles appearance well. 2/9/64, black & white TV, wood stove warming us in our farm house.

In terms of personality and stage presence, Ed brought the same stuff to the variety show genre that Jack Webb brought to police drama.

I was in 8th Grade at Cross Keys High School in Atlanta. All the girls at school were talking about "The Beatles will be on Ed Sullivan." I never had heard of The Beatles but had to watch that show on Sunday night. One of the great moments in American pop culture.

Wow.........topo gigio............how I hated that part of the show, and Ed thought it was just great. In my opinion, it was the biggest waste of television show time. I'm sure there are others as well.
