I am planning a custom car. The guy is starting with an AMC AMX which weighs about 3,500 pounds.

It will have an automatic transmission. What engine setup is good for thirty miles per gallon at 65MPH and do about 13 flat in the quarter mile?

To do it you want to do will require spending far more on the engine and transmission combo than you would ever save in fuel economy. How many miles are you going to drive a thing like that anyway? My classic vette gets only about 1000 miles a year on it. Drop a 401 in it with maybe a newer trans with O/D and roll.

A modern single-turbocharged 6cyclinder engine with one of the new controllers on it . Set it on an economical tune for mileage - performance setting for fast times .

Planning on 30mpg in a car like that is like planning a rifle build like the big firebreathers you shoot - then wanting it to be fur-friendly on grey fox smile .

I’m not seeing you hit that goal.

Maybe 20mpg. Maybe......

I’d look for a lq4 to swap in it. Find a good tremec with an over drive and a fairly tall rear end.

Correct there is no engine that will have that type of acceleration of the line and that much milage

1 liter engine is great on gas but will not get out of its own way. Really crap in the mountains but will get 30 miles to the gallon with the right drive train.

If 30 MPG is important, then you can’t afford the project

Anybody wanting to restore an AMC should have enough money to drive it.

Can't be done. You'll never get that acceleration and that weight with that mileage. 2 of 3 is possible, but not all 3. Cheapest way to go that fast is to give up 2 wheels and get a sport bike, smartest choice is to slow the hell down. IMHO.

I looked up the weight of an AMX & It looked to me to be more like 31-3200# for the 68-70. The 71's are likely heavier. But what ever the weight, shed some. All ya can. Gearing will need serious consideration as well.

Still not seeing both goals met, but the times are a changing, never say never.

Good luck.

It’ll be a bunch of money, and at the end, you’ll be stuck with an AMC.

😬

Wouldn't the trade in value of such a thing be about zero?

you could ad electronic fuel injection to the stock motor, cam it and gear it and the owner will forget about the 30 mpg while he's grinning ear to ear!. IE restomod. Or pull a 2.7 ecoboost out of a wrecked Mustang 21/30 mpg. A tune will ad 60hp if he wants a little more.
