Set and forget or target?
Best NEW inexpensive set and forget imho are the burris FFII and up.
Target scopes are not my forte but i hear great things about SWFA. I have a couple i use as set and forget and they have been flawless.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

PERSONALY...I would avoid the Leupold and Vortex all together. Meopta is great...but its slim pickings in the OPs price range.

I can't give much advice about the new market because I can't remember the the last time I bought a new scope.
I usually grab any Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40 I see in the $175 range. Same with any Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 I find in the $275-300 range. Both are out there if you have a little patience.
Those who must raise their voice to get their point across are generally not intelligent enough to do so in any other way.

The Philippine Nikons are great I agree. Only concern for me is that they are out of the gun biz so if something fails your up a creek .

Burris FF 11 should get it done. Mine showed up today from the mail person. Looks okay, haven't done anything with it yet.

Fixed power SWFA if you like a big fat dialer, FFII for set and forget.
Both are quite proven.

Hey guys,
Wanted opinions on a decen scope in the $200-$300 price range.
Thanks The FF IIs are beyond decent; good practical hunting scopes at a great price. Same applies to the E1s. If I could find one with a conventional duplex or the older ballistic plex rather than the newer versions, I’d be willing to pay extra for it, but I have and use both. There’s still a place for set and forget scopes. There’s a bunch who bemoan the dearth of light fixed powers, but you can set these to whatever power you crave and forget it’s a variable, and pay very little size and weight penalty.
What fresh Hell is this?

Oh I saw that, but wasn’t in the market then, or now. Have too many idle scopes as it is, and before you say it, no room for more rifles to stick them to!

Think Pappy is right (unless you can trust Optics Planet to actually HAVE the danged thing). Most of the E1’s out there have the “Ballistic Plex E1” (small etched) reticle, NOT the “Ballistic Plex” (spans entire view, non-etched, NON “E1”) reticle. I’ve got one of the “E1” reticles. Too damn small... Got Droptines, E1’s, and II’s with the “normal” ballistic plex, as well, and they are FINE for hunting. Burris effed up with the “Ballistic Plex E1” reticle. Should’ve made it bigger, or stuck with normal “Ballistic Plex”. They also should’ve had the decency to come up with a different name, to avoid confusion. Stupid marketing move...

I’m selling/sold my new Leupolds - the VX series. I’ve been buying FFII’s and am looking also at Elites and old Leupolds. Though the price on older Leupolds are often too high, in my opinion.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

If you are in Canada, your options are limited. You likely have already checked CGN for used prices. I found them to be silly as much for a used Bushnell 3200 as they were new, very recently.

According to this article, Japan. “Where are Bushnell Elite scopes made? All of Bushnell’s current offering of Elite rifle scopes are made in Japan. The older Elite series, like the 3200, 3500, 4200, 4500, and 6500 scope models, were also manufactured in Japan as well.” https://riflescope-review.com/where-are-bushnell-scopes-made-or-manufactured/Ymmv

Sightron SII. Big Sky. 3-9x or 3.5-10x.
They don't make them anymore. The Sightron SII Big Sky scope line was a big step up in glass quality over the Sightron SII, and had features from the higher level SIII scope line ( tracking design, and 7 layers of lens coating). They have a lifetime warranty, and were made in Japan. An outstanding scope, with a generous eye relief of 4" to boot, and resettable adjustment knobs.
The reason Sightron discontinued the SII Big Sky series was that it was too close in quality to their premium Sightron SIII series, and took away sales from the SIII.
Sightron SII Big Sky scopes are out there, but not often enough I guess the owners know "the secret." If you see one, grab it fast.
Another fine scope is a Burris Signature series (discontinued). A big step up optically over the very solid Fullfield series.

Used Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40. Fantastic scope and often go for around $300. I have 3 of them and prefer it over my Leupold VX5 or vortex scopes.

An older 3-9x40 4200 Elite would fit your needs well and then some. IF you can find one for sale.

I spoke with Sightron support a while back and they confirmed that the SII Big Sky is basically an SIII with a 1 inch tube. Excellent scopes if you can find one. I got a 3-12x42 off of ebay for $300. Its been a while.
