Looking at upgrading the scope on my 17 hornet. The top 2 I am thinking about is the Burris Fullfield 4-14 or the Weaver Grand Slam 6.5-20×40. Any real difference in clarity and tracking? My hornet is my groundhog gun(out to 250 or 300 yds) and general starling/pest control. Currently has a cheap Mueller scope (the 100 dollar version) that works ok, but don't like the eye box.

Dude, if you can get a Grand Slam for anywhere near the same prices as an FF, do it.

Hindsight being what it is, I am kicking myself for not loading up on them when Natchez was closing them out.

So I figure 265 is a fair price? Saw 1 on EBay where current bid was 255 with 4 days to go yet.

Anyone that reads the Optics forums can easily see that more than a boatload of folks are buying from the used market to get the scopes they prefer because these scopes are no longer being manufactured. I don't think we are THAT small of a niche. OK thread hijack/rant done. RJ

I have Four or Five Weaver 30mm Classic Extreme scopes. I wish that I had bought more of them when I could get them from Natchez. I cannot believe Weaver was phased out, they were a quality scope.

Grand Slam has better glass much clearer view. I have both. Burris FF2 has been better as far as reliability for me.

One Weaver downside is the mystery warranty, now that they’ve gone under. Might be risk worth taking....

Very true Pappy. I dread the day that my Weaver Classic V 1-3x20 takes a crap. I have it on a Winchester SS M70 308 in a McEdge. with the scope mounted, that carbine weighs 6 pounds 11 ounces. It's great for driven game on 1x and easy for shooting animals up to 150 yards on 3x. But any more (at my age) with it so difficult to send anything in the mail (because of the paranoid way anything gun related is looked upon over here), when I have a failure, I will just trash it after disassembly (to satisfy my curiosity), and mount another out of my healthy stock of optics or just buy another one. There is an abundance of Euro made scopes available used over here, even 1" tube models. RJ

Here the risk is just mailing anything, period. The postal system is hosed; partly from the Plague, but mostly just hosed. Did you see that postal inspectors here are cruising social sites for potential troublemakers now? Next, they’ll be setting up stings like the real Feds. They oughta be looking into how screwed up their own shop is. Used to be a big P.O. booster, because our local folks are really good, but I think it’s beyond repair now. I’ve been sending a bunch of stuff from the estate I’m working on by Priority, but effectively there is no Priority now.

Burris is a safe bet. Wish they made a nice 1-6 FF. I really like the 1-6 Trijicon Credo HX I bought, but it was spendy.

I think the GS is better. But for the money, I’m not sure how Burris builds a scope as good as the FF II.
