While I continue to gather photos for every variation... (ugh), and do more research.. one of the guys on Facebook suggested something.

Would there be any interest in a reduced size/content pocket reference that would contain updated date charts, models made each year, info for each model and variations (but not pictures of each variation)? Small booklet that'd be easy to carry through a gun show?

I've got enough info on all the models to go to print, just need to make a trip or two to get more photos for the complete book.

Thoughts?

It won't be a pocket reference, just a paperback reference. It was going to be a tad larger than Murray's in order for the pictures to be decent.

This would be smaller - 4 1/4" x 7 1/8". Not claiming the pictures will be great.. but you'd have the data with you. Anybody who's ever tried to carry a 6" x 9" Murray's through a gun show will know it doesn't fit in a pocket very well. This would be almost half the size of Murray's.

Here's a thought. How about offering the members here the opportunity to buy the same number of your book as they have for David's book(s)? For example, I have #399 of his first book with the same number on order for the new book. It would be neat to have the same number for all three books.
To keep people honest you'd probably have to get David to send you a list of names and numbers for his books.

I hadn't really thought ahead to sending out numbered copies. I suppose I could do that, though I'd probably reserve the really popular numbers for the guys who have helped so much by getting information to me for the book.

I think there's a few guys who probably have been rolling their eyes up this last 2 years going.. "Oh cripes, another email/PM/text from Calhoun!". grin

I'll be selling numbered magnifying glasses as well with a very reasonable payment plan. grin

The font on these isn't bad. I've had to chop the number of words for each model, I didn't reduce the font.

Got to burn a couple vacation days this month, so got a 4 day weekend starting tomorrow. I'll get to work on it and see if I can't get the rest of the models reformatted for it. Then I'll start finding miscellaneous pictures to fill up the blank spots.

This may not be too long of a process.

Murray did a hell of a job back when all research had to be done by hand... but it drives me bonkers now to look at a lot of those entries and to know how much more accurate info we've dug up here for all the models.

Sooner or later some wisacre is going to ask for an audio book version. And there's the Kindle users too. Maybe one in Braille?

Large print version looks like a set of Encyclopedia Britannicas. Throw it on the lawn cart and head to the gunshow! LOL.

Hey I'd like any reference books Savage you fellas put together.

I would love a braille copy to place prominently on my bench at the range. Guys all up and down the line will be more anxious than a dog trying to pass a peach pit sideways.

print books are, .. so 15th century. How about a fully programmed small I-tablet, with chronological pages, serial number ranges for each model, and a single picture, then clickable links for further drop-down detail menus?
...or, maybe you could do fold-out pages...

Thanks for all Your work!! And I agree, more reference material will be great!! All ships rise with the tide! Sign me up for three copies please! I don't need a numbered copy, I'd be happy just owing you copy-right money for the rest of my life, (... a personal "Rory Hancock" dedication would be nice!)

Obviously both Murray's and mine are Savage 99 reference books and will talk about 99's, but mine isn't just an updated Murrays. In fact I think I opened Murray's book once while writing this, and that was just to see what he had for the precursor rifles - which won't be in the pocket reference at all.

This is more properly called the campfire pocket reference guide.. cuz I scrounged through a lot of old threads and had folks (Rick, Fug, Gene) digging through old notes for information on everything. I think I got Loggah to walk a few extra miles looking at his guns every now and then too. grin

Rory, do you have a photo of a Rentzschke engraved 99F? I missed one at the Denver show quite a few years ago because I didn't know what is was. I'll send you a photo if you don't have one.

I don't yet, but I doubt I'll have a picture of one in the pocket reference. Probably need one for the full book.

I wish every Tom Dick and Harry who will ever buy, own, borrow, inherit, or steal a Savage 99 buys one of these field guides. Aside from eliminating a lot of super-repetitive queries here and on FB, it would make Calhoun filthy stinkin' rich and he could then take us all out for ice cream.

Make a note that I'll take a copy, Rory.

I'm thinking a couple magnum scoops. Maybe something along the lines of a 375 H&H!

And yes.. everybody should buy one for each 1895, each 1899 and each 99 they own. Definitely good idea. grin

Make a note that I'll take a copy, Rory.

If he is going to get filthy rich he must have a different publisher than I have. I would have to sell almost a million copies of the Collector's Guide to get a million bucks in royalties. My next royalty check is due by next Friday. I bet they forgot to send it again.

Definitely won't be getting filthy rich. But mine also won't be a reference guide you'll find on Amazon or in Barnes & Noble soon, because doing the "global distribution" thing through book dealers gives an immediate 50% of the book price to the dealer as profit and would remove pretty much all profit I made unless I bump the price up. Pretty much like they do to you.

So I'll probably sell a limited number of books myself for you guys and to take to gun shows/etc, and then there will be an online store available to buy your own copies from for as long as you want. It won't be a printing run of X number of copies.. as long as folks keep ordering it, the books will keep being made. Once the book is available I'll pass that online store link around.

Printed out a sample run on my printer last night.. 108 pages at the moment with all the models from 1895A to 99RMEF and date charts in it. Need to add checkering/engraving chapters, few other things at the end. It looked good. Have to clean up the photos to print brighter, shrinking them down has caused them to print really dark. Getting there, though.

I can sit and work at the computer for 16 hours a day with no problems...

But, boy... do I hate working with pictures. A few hours of that and my eyes start going out of focus... Good thing I never had the urge to be a graphics designer.

Coming along nicely. Having to rework the pictures for the smaller page format, but have all the dates, models by year and model information in. About 75% done with reworking the pictures, then add in a couple of short post chapters - would like to include barrel addresses, but think I'll skip that for the initial release. Just don't have a complete set of info. I don't usually pay too much attention to barrel addresses, but that 99T in 22HP on GB with a barrel from 20 years earlier shows how useful it can be.

I appreciate them more now. My eyes literally won't focus on anything more than 20 feet away. Time to get outside for a while.

I know how you feel. I spent all day yesterday and today checkering. Tiny wooden diamonds are imprinted on my eyeballs.

Sent out first draft to a couple of victims volunteers who have offered to proofread it for typos and content. Still some work to do on it... but it's coming along! Got a 5 day weekend to add the few missing parts.

No.. until I get the proof copy in hand, I have no idea how much rework will be necessary on pictures/etc. So just trying to get to the point of being able to do that proof copy.

I'm still under the impression he's honoring David's numbers for matching sets. I'm in for 2, #22 and #23.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

Murray's books has numerous errors because he had to dig up all the information manually, and we've had 30+ years to refine our knowledge of 99's.

What Murray did was awesome, but we have much better information now.

And I'm sure we'll find mistakes in mine. I'll probably start an errata list here here of corrections so that folks can print it out and put it in their book.

When the errors get to be serious enough, I can update the book and release a 2nd edition easily.

Not always errors. Often it is thing we just didn't know at the time. Those finds are what keeps the Savage levers interesting for me.

An error, to me, is just an incorrect statement. So Murray's had them, David's has them, mine will have them. We just don't know everything now, and some of what we believe is wrong. Date ranges are something that will continue to be refined for years to come probably.

And then you'll feel like an idiot later when something you didn't know about becomes common knowledge and people talk about your book like, "He did the best he could with only the internet to work with" LOL

Only if google translate will handle.. and even then all those long German words would double the page count.

Still have a few things to get together, but uploaded the 95% that is done (well.. hopefully is done) and ordered a proof copy. Get it back as soon as possible to find out which pictures won't work and which pages might need to be redone.

Life is good. Now just have to wait..

Oooh... draft copies in hand! Don't harass me about the cover, I threw something together in 15 minutes just to get the draft copies printed. Though actually.. I'm kind of liking it.

And the pictures look FAR better than I expected. The print quality is amazing. If anything, I might have to reduce exposure on a few pictures that are too bright.

Some of the special grade pictures are pretty dark. I'll see what I can do about improving those.

6" x 9" is "trade" size, pretty much the default and very common. I was thinking just slightly larger than trade for my full book, but since I'm doing this small version I might make the full book even a bit larger. We'll see.

The end is near... thank goodness! grin

Few fixes this weekend, review latest data for start/end dates per year, then upload and print off another draft.. hopefully it'll be good and ready by end of the month. If I need to make fixes after seeing the draft, probably mid-August.

140 pages, not counting the cover. Photographs aren't all that great, but it has the best I could do on the small format.

Proof reading.. sucks, but so necessary. Almost invented a 250-30000 cartridge for a dozen models.

I think I'd want a recoil pad for that.. maybe a vehicle mount. grin

It's... done.

Hopefully.

Final draft copies ordered. Unless there's a serious flaw, should be available to order online in a few weeks. Might be 5-6 weeks before I have any in hand to ship out.

I think I see drinking in my future tonight. A lot of sleep after that..

The pictures are what they are. At this small format, there won't be a lot of detail in many. But better than nothing, and most will be "okay". Buy it for the data. Then we can start improving on that, especially for postmils.

I think the final count is 142 significant variations of 58 different models.

That's not counting things like the 800,000 rifles as a variation, different calibers as variations, different barrel lengths as variations, or counting very small groups of transition rifles, late rifles with a mixture of early model features, etc. So the blued DE's got a mention, but there weren't enough made to become a 'variation'. On the other hand, a few hundred octagon barreled 99C's were enough to be a variation.

142 production variations that were catalogued or made in significant numbers.

That's a lot of variations... wonder if we'll find more postmil variations?

PS: A few instances, like the 1927-1928 group of 99's that were made with a mirror blue, could be argued that they should be a separate variation. I noted the change, but in the end didn't make them a separate variation. I'd love to see the ledger entries for some of those..

122623 was a 1912 src. .303 that made it's way to B.C. and which is ,I believe a mirror blue though not much is left of the finish it shows that prospective. It needs to be reassembled ;at this point needing only a new saddle ring staple.
Incidently your book will be in demand and so will David's for a long time out there.

Thank you. I hope folks find it useful.

And yeah.. your 1899F is the 3rd variation and would have had mirror blue finish and perchbelly stock. By serial number it would date to very early 1912, though guns didn't get finished in serial number order so it might have been accepted a bit later.

Well.. I'll see if I can't find a spare, raggedy edged copy that's laying around after I ship all the rest. Anything for you, Roy! grin

No, there'll be plenty. No worries.

David is going to dig out his spreadsheet and send it to me here in the next couple of days for who got numbered copies. I'll try to stick with that so folks can have matching numbered books, at least for the first couple of months. I don't know how many empty slots are in that list, or how many folks won't be around to ask or maybe won't want a copy of mine. So if you don't have a numbered book from David Royal, you might need to wait a couple months before you can claim jump somebody else's number that hasn't spoken up. grin

If the proofs that show up this week look good, there will be a web site up almost immediately that you can order unsigned copies from. Delivery will probably take 3 weeks after ordering. If the proofs don't look good or need fixes.. might be another 2 or 3 more weeks for me to get new proofs after making fixes.

For those wanting signed or signed/numbered copies, I'll be posting up my address for folks to send a check to. I'll have to wait for a mass order to be shipped to me, and then ship them to you - so there will probably still be a 3 week delay before you get it in your hands. Joys of USPS. Yay.

Good question, my vote is for ‘Rory’s book’.

Reserve a copy for me also, Rory. Could've used this book 5-10 years ago when I was in the throes of the addiction, before I entered rehab!

The spreadsheet is a mess. I didn't write the numbers by some people's names. Fortunately I saved all the letters. It'll take a while but I'll get them together and send them to you.

Don't see why not, if the bank will cash it. Gonna have to work out shipping for up there, tho.

Done..

Oh, and I forgot. No un-numbered books. I'll do 500 cuz I like you guys so much, but after that if you want a signed book you'll have to catch me at a gun show or SavageFest or buy me a beer. I don't want to be shipping books forever.

This will increase the rarity of signed books and increase their collector values in the years to come, so it's really to help y'all out. grin

It's the time to reserve numbers. Hoping the time to get them out the door is soon. Waiting... waiting... It's like watching that stupid progress bar on computer apps. It gets to 90% done and then stops there for 4 hours.

I don't want a specific number, but your lip prints in red lipstick would be a hoot!! (And don't forget the blank check to use as a bookmark!!)

A cool imprint would be to use a .303 case head as a rubber stamp under your signature.....

Best way to make these collectible is for one of you high rollers to buy all the remaining ones and stick them in a box in the attic. LOL

To 99er's on the forum/here and there. Back on the 19th (found on page 7 of this thread) I made a request for #28 of Rory's book. If there is any of you who have #28 of David's book and want a like number of Rory's, let him know. I wrote him a PM in reference to this. I have David's book but it isn't numbered, but figured one of you reading may want good Ol #28 (my badge number when I was fighting crime and corruption). Good day to all. Sav. 94C

I've got it entered as "if available". All good.

Once I start shipping I'll probably give folks a month couple weeks to pop up and claim their matching number to David's book, after that I'll start shipping books with unclaimed numbers.

Another milestone hit.. final proofs are HERE!!! Well, I hope to heck they are final proofs.

I'll be going looking through them for glaring errors. But barring something major, I think the website to buy them will be up within a week.

And.. it will be available in both paperback (good for carrying in the back pocket for gun shows), and hardcover (good for a desk copy). Paperbacks are 4.25" x 6.875" x 0.375", hardcovers are 4.5" x 7.125" x 0.5"

Printer made it easy to do both, so I thought what the heck. The higher cost for the hardback is just how much more the printer charges, I'll make about the same off of either book.

I don't think the shopping cart will charge tax to folks from outside of Nebraska, so prices will be:

Web site: (shipping should be $5 or bit less for cheapest option, or pay for overnight if you want.. grin)
------------
Paperback: $21.99 each plus shipping
Hardcover: $28.99 each plus shipping

Signed copy: (I think I can get shipping under $5 for most of US)
-----------------
Paperback: $26.99 each plus shipping
Hardcover: $33.99 each plus shipping

[[Linked Image from live.staticflickr.com]

PS: A calendar similar to the one the books are sitting on will probably be available as well. Almost all the pictures are from Fug's collection, and will showcase the checkering and engraving styles for 1899's since I couldn't get good pictures of those in this small book.

Probably put my address out for y'all next week.

But folks should consider this the countdown for reserving a book number that matches their book from David. In a couple weeks I'll match up the numbers I know about, and then starting the rest from the bottom and going up.

Books ordered..

Working on getting a PO box for checks to be mailed to. Probably won't have it until Monday since I have to be there in person to show 2 forms of ID. Can't get a PO box without 2 forms of ID, but they want you to be able to vote without showing any? Sure, THAT makes sense.

So.. I should have an address to mail for y'all to mail checks to on Monday. Should have the books and be set up to start shipping signed books hopefully by 3 weeks from now.

Web site to order unsigned books is live right now. So if you'd like to buy any unsigned copies, head to:

www.savagelevers.com

Check back to the web site in a couple days, there's a calendar I'm waiting to get a proof of that I'll be selling as well. Pictures from the Fug collection... I'll enable it for sales once I see a copy. In fact you might want to wait a couple days to buy there and get the calendar with the unsigned book(s) for combined shipping, the calendar should be a treat if the pics printed well.

Web site orders may be slow, printing and shipping likely to take 2-3 weeks.

It was a fun talk! I should have kept count of how many times the wives rolled their eyes and said “I have no idea what they’re talking about!”. grin

You didn't have a mailing address before? LOL

I placed an order for four books. I am getting very forgetful in my old age and I just know I am going to have trouble remembering where i put them.

Saw the calendar, and I think it’s a go for sales.

Each month of this 16 month calendar is a showcase of a checkering or engraving style, with almost all pictures coming from Fug’s collection (a couple pictures of my guns slipped in). The two B checkering styles share a page, the early fleur-de-lis and the later flame style.

So thank Fug for this - and for a lot of the info and pics in the book as well.

It’s available on the web page now so you should be able to combine shipping with unsigned books. I won’t be signing or shipping calendars - signing my name onto Fug’s stuff would be wrong.

Aaahh… I don’t have a link to a PayPal account for me set up. Didn’t know that was an option truthfully. Shut down my PayPal account years ago when they started their anti-gun crusade.

Sorry. I’ll look into it Sunday hopefully.

Most bank checking accounts include the Zelle service. This is a secure, cost free, electronic transfer.

Y'all should check that out.

Using an online service to provide shopping cart/payment handling. A lot of options, but I don’t see Zelle.

Sept. 2021 through Dec. 2022.

And I probably wasn't clear before - if you order books or a calendar from the website, the printer will ship directly to you when they print it (5-9 day wait usually, I think). I won't handle it.

When you buy a signed book, it will be a book I've had shipped to my house, and that I will then ship to you.

You need to post that on the website very clearly. Also the number requested which would be dropped at some point.

You were PERFECTLY clear. I am like a kid in a candy store. All I saw was the books are ready to order through the website is up. BINGO order os placed I have hopes for maybe a signature at a later date. I got a phone call from someone asking me if I was into the sauce. He told me it was a 16 month calander. Thank you, Rory, for your diligence.

Hey, Rory. I've been busy and keep forgetting to put my order in. I'd like one of each, hard and soft bound. If possible, my signed copies of both of David"s books are 22 and 23. If those numbers are available, I'll take them. If not, what ever you have is good.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

Got back from our Yellowstone vacation last night that we had cancelled last year. I’m going to compile all the book number requests today. Should be no problem, Joe.

Stephen, I think we can get you a couple signed copies at some point. grin

Let be the one to ask....

Where do we send the checks/MO's for ordering?

If we buy through the website, will you know who it is and assign the requested numbers?

Signed copies and price?

Inquiring 24 campers need to know!

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

I love this place...

I'll be posting an address tomorrow. Had to get back from a Yellowstone vacation to set up a PO Box, sorry.

Any books ordered through the website will be unsigned and unnumbered, since those will ship direct from the printer. My bad for not saying that clearly.. I updated the web page.

Unsigned copies will be $5 less if ordered on the web site.

Thanks.

Just don't want to miss the opportunity!

Besides, having a "pocket reference" when in a gunshop is way better than my memory at this point!

I pity those who don't frequent this forum.

Table of contents, just so folks know what's in the book. Tried to focus on subjects that you'd want to look up when you were in a gun show looking at a gun.

Barrel addresses are one thing I'd have liked to add. They'll be in the 2nd Edition and the larger book hopefully.

Anyone who has my book could copy the barrel addresses and put them loosely in your book.

Hey Calhoun---Are you saying the 2nd Edition whenever that comes out will contain more info than the current 1st? Anymore info than just the barrel address or will there be alot more 99 info not in the 1st? Just curious!

For the Pocket Reference, I can't think of any more info to include than maybe the barrel addresses. Just isn't room to add much more and keep it a pocket sized book. I'm sure we'll find a few errors in the book, refine some serial number ranges and date mappings.. but what's there will stay the same as far as I can think of. Also no idea when a 2nd Edition will come out.. depends on how many errors we find, probably. grin
I'd guess a couple years, barring major errors being found. I do plan on providing an errata sheet for the book with corrections that you can slip in.

When I get working on the 2nd book, which will be a larger format.. that one will have more subjects in it. But it won't be a pocket guide you'll carry through a gun show unless you carry it in a backpack. But when I start on the bigger book, and when I finish it are big questions. Surely won't be this year, and even next year would be aggressive.

Well there's no icon for a 'thumbs up' to post so I'll just say "Thumbs up", "OK". and "10-4"!!!!! I couldn't wait anyway, will be going a numbered route, still a 'go' for #28, unless someone with David's book has #28 and wants a like numbered book of yours. Will wait a bit, if no request. I'll send a check or POMO which ever you prefer. Sav'94. smile
