Wrote many of them back in west central Ks in the late 60s, early 70s. Been 45 plus years since I’ve seen one.

I think they ended in the 70s here. Anyone have teouble reconciling your account because you forgot to record a counter check in your registry? A kid was showing me Venmo last weekend. It is a way to send money and show all your friends your check registry.

We had them into the 80's here in SD. Quite a thing when you think about it. People would mistakenly write on the wrong bank and the bank would just send it through and take care of it at the clearinghouse level. Wow.

When I moved to South Dakota in 1999 the fellow who owned one the local banks liked counter checks so he still used them. When he passed away the counter checks went with him.

I remember them, but I'm guessing its been 50 years since I saw one. When I was in high school, I didn't have a banking account, but everyone knew everyone in our small town, so the local merchants let me write counter checks on my parents account. Bank never raised an eyebrow. Only did it a few times.
