Here are some pictures of how the rail cuts differ in a 700 Short Action 223 vs. 308.

The stainless action is a 308.

Notice
1). The opening cut on the 223 is shorter than the 308.
2). The bottom of the rail facing the magazine on the 308 has an angled cut vs. the 223.
3). the ejection port on mine was .020 (not a lot but it’s not small either) on the 308.

The pictures show you the feed area (cut out) of the rail is longer on the 308, and that there is a angled cut all the way down the action on the 308, but only at the front of the 223.

Is the hole spacing the same for the two action screws? I bought a short action stock and the action screws don't seem to line up right on my 300WSM wood stock.

The stock holes are the same... on these two, and should be the same for the WSM’s that use the Short action as well.

In your experience, will a 308 action feed 223 based cartridges with a bolt swap and floorplate/spring/mag box change? Or have you tried that? I was under the impression that it would work, but I did not know there were feedrail differences between the two.
