I’ve never owned one or cared for the looks. If you do, that’s great!

To my eye, full-stock "modern rifles" (meaning not muzzleloaders) always look best with short barrels. I have 2. Both made by me. One has an 18" and one an 18.5" barrel. In my years as a gunsmith I have probably made about 25 others. One that was a real cutie was made on a Remington 722 with a cut down(16") barrel in 222 Remington and it would shoot into 1/2" at 100 when it was done.
For barrels from 16"-19" long I prefer to use cartridges that burn their powder well in a shorter bore. The old German "standard" the 8X57 does pretty well, but others that do even better are the 338 Fed, the 358 Winchester, the 9X57 and 9.3X57. If making a 9X57 the best way to make one is to use a reamer with a pilot to fit the "American size" bore of our .358 size, instead of the "German sized" .355". Brass is super easy to make by simply running an 8X57 into the die and out comes a 9X57. Used with bullets from 180 to 225 grains the 9X57 is a very good shell for carbine barrels.
A standard 308 Winchester, especially if you use bullets on the heavy side does pretty well also.
Several years ago I made a full stock Mauser carbine for a man in 458 Winchester. We used the ammo I had for my M70, and it had a 25 inch barrel. We chronographed it from his 18" carbine. In my 25" barrel the load clocked 2112 FPS average. From his 18" barrel it was still going 1987 FPS average. So the bullet only gave up 125 FPS with a loss of 7" or barrel. He lives outside of Kenai Alaska and told me he wanted it to hunt moose and bears in the timber and that the loss of 125 FPS would not be noticed. I believe he is correct.
Not all that important, but those cartridges that people feel "should be fast" are not the best ones to make carbines with. If you like long full-stock rifles with long barrels it makes no difference but for those that think (as I do) that full stock bolt actions should have short barrels, caliber selection should be considered.

Anschutz 1433 22Hornet. LilGun & 40gr BT’s and Berger FBV BRNO 22F 7x57. Factory Hornady 139gr SST’s. Doesn’t like Fed factory 175’s. Looking to try handloaded 160 NP and AB’s Waffen-lux 8x57 (Heidelberg shop that made/makes sporter conversions). Nosler factory 200gr NP. Looking to kill with it yet.

Nice looking Remington 600.
Whoever did the work, did two of the things that I do when I build on a 600/660 action, changing out the recoil lug and the bottom metal. CVMW makes the best 600/660 bottom metal that I've seen.

Is it possible that when the bolt handle was changed, a bolt shroud from an early 700 series rifles installed?
You would expect a 600 Mohawk to have the later long bolt shroud since it was made in the 1970's, while an early 600 might have the earlier short bolt shroud.
