The hired man who lives at one of my farms spotted a Fox den less than 100 yards from the buildings. I got a chance to investigate today and took some pics of the kits. I found it unusual for den to be that close to a house. I wonder if the vixen was thinking it would be safer from Coyotes. Fox are real scarce in these parts because Coyotes are hard on them.

I always know the coyotes are around when the fox are tight in around my place. The grey fox seem to do better now that they have moved in, probably because of their ability to climb.
Great pics.

They’re fun to watch. Our farm is on both sides of the road and in the barn directly across from the house we have a littler of fox pups every couple years. The little one come out right at dark like clock work. Really fun to watch. They come up in the yard and eat the dog food and play with the dog toys and haul them across the road. The older dog started carrying his bowl to the middle of the yard and pissing on it. Haven’t seen any this year yet

At the farm I grew up on in PA, we get a litter out behind the barn for a few years, then they'll be scarce for a few years, then back again. I'm told it has to do with the ebb and flow of canine distemper in the coyote population.

I have heard that is exactly the reason they like to den close to humans. To keep safe from coyotes

I used to have a pair of grays around here. That was years ago and I'm sure they're dead of old age if not coyotes. I do see a red occasionally during winter. It typically prowl the frozen shore of the nearby lake in winter and sometimes cuts across my property. I leave the fox alone as I don't have any small livestock to worry about, otherwise...

When I was still in NY spotted an active den and put two trail cams near it. Had 4 kits in multiple pics and videos for a few weeks. Then I got coyotes on cams and never saw the kits again.

I’ve noticed fox here living in areas as small as a few acres of overgrown brush at a closed shipyard literally surrounded by neighborhoods and traffic to get away from coyotes.

We used to have a den near my house for a long time, but I haven’t seen them in a few years. I suspect coyotes took over. Now the coyotes seem to be gone, I think a neighbor thinned the coyotes out, or it’s just a cycle of things. Foxes are pretty cool to watch hunt, plus they eat gophers so they get a free pass.

Another good reason to lay on the coyotes!

More coyotes, less foxes, more rodents, more tick- borne diseases.

A few years ago, mid winter, I’d put a roadkill deer on the ice out front maybe 175 yards out. About half an hour before dusk a real pretty red fox showed up on the carcass. It was only there a minute or so when it took off like lightning straight towards my place and under my shed he went.
I kept watch and two or three minutes later a coyote came onto the lake a hundred yards down and made a bee line for the carcass. One step from the carcass I ended the coyote. Always been curious as to what tipped that fox off when the coyote was still a ways off.
