DVNV, I understand your point. But statistical fact reveals most amateur golfers overestimate their distance ability with each club even when they do hit it pure. Therefore, the recommendation of up-clubbing as the data shows a higher percentages of misses are short. And hazard trouble is usually found up front.
For some players it is simple vanity, club number to yardage. And the manufacturers have played games with that bigtime.

The fact remains that (what Flave said and I agree with him) inside of 110 or so yards you have to know how to hit the ball and with what club (full swing or not) to put it where it needs to be.
That's the bottom line and I'm sure different people have different methods. I know when I hit the range next week I'll be working on the short game and pitching. I actually bought a game for pitching that I will be playing with this summer hoping to improve my game.

The greatest ball striker of all time said that he hit a shot exactly as he intended about twice a round. He said that you should always play one more club length than what you thought the shot required because odds are much better you’ll mishit it and lose a bit distance than pure it.
I’ve found that to be sound advice and if it was good enough for him, it’s good for all the mere mortals who have followed him. Things have changed in the 70 or so years since that was said. Clubs are more forgiving, less distance lost for a modest mishit. I'll opine that "one more club than you think" is bad advice today. There are exceptions, but on most tough courses (or greens), up and down from short is easier than from long. This assumes one actually knows how far one hits it on a regular basis, some folks are naturally optimistic. It might would be bad advice for him today since his average mishit was better than 99 percent of the shots you’ll ever hit. But for the skill level of everyone in this thread, it still applies. You are painting with an ignorant brush. Uh...no, Hogan’s worst shot in an average round was better than 99 percent of your best. And the advice remains sound.

It's a myth that you will hit more greens at full club distances. Or consistently hit a 6 through 9 +5/-5, that would be 15ft and under putts all day long on par 3s and 4s... not happening.
People feel they hit better shots 150 out, because it's all physical and not much mental and it's one swing, they don't actually get on the green as much as they think but it was the right distance wrong direction, right direction wrong distance, felt good but came up short, misclubbed, caught it just fat or thin... and still have a chip to get on.
Problem with a 50 yard shot is it's mostly mental, big old green up there and they should get it really close to the hole. All kinds of weird swings... skip, block, flop, chop, 45 degree hip turn, toe point, straight arm, wrist cock... not considering front pin, middle pin, back pin each 1/3rd of the holes.
If you are happy hitting anywhere on the green and going for the fat part of the green at 150, then do it at 50 and break the mental chains. Easy regular swing, slow for the fat part of the green, gets it up in the air and moving forward. If you are not forcing a shot guaranteed you will be on the green more times a 50 than 100.

If you can't get off the tee without taking penalties, your score won't ever be good no matter if you have an amazing short game. If your approaches are long irons because you're short off the tee, same. Now, I did putt into the ocean once in Hawaii, but, as a general rule, it's not easy to take penalty strokes on the green. Three putting sucks, but three off the tee is worse.

Here’s a little humbler game. Drop the ball at 150 on par 4’s, 100 on par 5’s, play the par 3’s. Give yourself all the drives and second shots on the 5’s.
