I have a pre-64 model 70 in 30-06. After a lot of thought & of course, having many calibers I decided to stay with the original 30-06. I purchased a McMillan from Rick & had a smith jewel the bolt & engrave the floorplate with scroll & my initials. Topped off with a Leupold 6X42MM scope. Nice package & will hunt everything in NA except dangerous game.

The least amount of fuss I like a 9.3x62 but the cool factor would go to 404. The really cool factor would be a 10.75x68.

Rusty: Can't believe you tore up that great rifle for an action.........Don't you know all pre64's are held in trust for the next owners? whoever they may be...........

BobinNH, I must agree with your sentiments 100%. The very idea of taking an original un-screwed with pre-64 M70 of any type or vintage and destroying its originality verges on being criminal.
Now if that particular rifle has been pre-messed with and is beyond restoration then it could/would be a candidate for "customization" and/or conversion.
I have many original pre-64's in my assembleage of rifles and wouldn't dream of altering any of them. I have several that I have acquired that were modified/altered beyond the point where restoration is possible. These rifles have been modified to meet some project that I found to be intriging. Among these is an early postwar 30-06 that has been converted to .257AckImp with an original M70 .257Robt that had already been rechambered which I had in my collection of parts. This rifle required restocking since the original stock had an elephant carved into the butt.
Others include a rebarreled rifle in 7x57mm (after market barrel) installed in a rather nice custom stock. It is now rechambered to .284Win and is a favorite "shooter"; and one that had the bolt face altered for a magnum cartridge (.338WinMag)with an after-market bbl and is now a .270WeaMag with a rechambered standard M70 .270Win bbl and lives in an original equipment M70 monte carlo stock that has had a pad installed which would otherwise be worthless.
Another is a "transistion" model in .30-06 that had been D&T'd for a Pachmeyer sidemount scope mount. Obviously a rifle beyond restoration. It has now been fitted with a .243Win M70 bbl that had been rechambered to 6mm/.284 found at a gunshow.
Again, my sentiments are that in no way should an original pre-64 M70 be altered in any way. Certainly, the pre-64 M70 action serves as a great foundation for a "custom" rifle and there are many "screwed-with" M70's available that could be used for such a project.

Well, hells bells forum. Ya'll wondered when I would return to earth with a blood pressure under 300/200 and rant and rave over the proposed carnage and sacrilege. If you aren't fixing to shoot a buff or griz the 30-06 works pretty good on all the critters around these parts. And a pre 64? That's like painting a 300 SL in florescent orange and green. Wayne

Dewker: Years past I tore up a few "beaters" for custom rifles, but don't do even that anymore, unless, like you say, they're too far gone. I've found that a FEW custom rifles offer a big advantage over pre64's, but not many; certainly not the current $4000 Rem/Stainless/etc "customs". Pre 64 's are best left alone. I hunt with mine and sometimes drop them into synthetic and leave the wood stock in the corner. This harms nothing.

If I had an extra pre 64 I'd be trying to figure out how to turn it into an '06, not the other way around? Wayne
