Local Ford dealer has closed his doors indefinitely.

Got my 2020 F150 with an 8/20 build date in January and glad I did. Used truck prices around the SE are crazy high too. Sold my 08 Suburban in great shape with 245K miles with new engine change at 200K and trans at 210K for $14K.... Great price and better when you look at new sticker prices.

Hard to believe there's no substitute for any given chip. Doesn't anybody write code anymore?

Local Ford dealer has closed his doors indefinitely. That is just a few days production. They wont' stop on partial assembly.

I noticed the other day that the local Ford dealer had maybe 25% of the trucks that they normally have. I've been kicking around the idea of getting a new F-250, but will probably just keep driving my 2017 F-150. New truck, and car, prices have gotten just too high, and that new car smell isn't worth what it was at one time.

Hard to believe there's no substitute for any given chip. Doesn't anybody write code anymore? Everyone who uses chip is kinda screwed right now, from network gear manufacturers to truck makers because demand outstripped supply and supply was forecasted last year. It's going to take at least 12 months to catch up if the Rona goes away. It takes time make chips, and capacity is limited. Capacity expansion takes years. By the time Ford realized they need more chips to make more trucks, it was already too late.

I wonder who the chip suppliers are but I suspect it is China. I worked for a while at one of Motorola's big chip manufacturing plant in 1994-95 back when they making their popular flip phones with the little antennae (that wasn't connected to anything). I'm pretty sure Motorola was making all of Ford's electronics back then.

They aren't the only ones, Honda has a transmission plant in the West Georgia Area that is waiting on chips also.

I'm pretty sure Motorola was making all of Ford's electronics back then. 60 Minutes had a piece on the chip shortage on 5/2. US used to manufacture 37% of the chips. They're now down to 12%. Taiwanese company is now the single larges producer of chips. New facilities cost billions and have their own demand for chips to run all the robitics. One can see why the US should pay attention to the sovereignty of Tiawan and not let it fall into the hands of China.
I never thought I'd grow up to be a grumpy old man, but I did, and I'm killin' it.
