At least in California.
Been doing it for decades.

It seems terribly old-fashioned to have to carry all these documents around with you. Here the police don't even need to stop you to know that your car has current registration and insurance, they just scan your plates. They also can of course tell if the car's reported stolen, or if the plates are on the wrong car, the same way.

When I lived in New York, your registration card was the size of a drivers license, and everyone kept it in their wallet next to their drivers license. In Florida, I didn't have that option, since the registration is way too large to fit in a wallet. So it rides in the glove compartment. I'd MUCH rather it be small enough to keep in a wallet.

No you have to be concerned about ‘reaching’ when asked to present it.

Colorado gives 2 copies with instructions to put the one without address in the car just for that reason.

Another convenience we offer thieves is to have our garage door openers clipped to the sun visor. Thief breaks in, grabs your registration and garage door opener, hard charges over to your home and doesn't even have to break in. "Click," and the garage door opens and in he walks.

Shopping time begins. grin

You would think in this age it all would be like that. Hell, I can pull up my insurance card on my phone and that's fine but your screwed if you don't have your paper copy of registration. Yet the cop can run the plates?????

One thing Massachusetts did right was registration and proof of insurance was on one document.

I keep truck registration plus all the trailers it might pull in the same clip in the glove box.

Copies of all, driver's license, passports, insurance cards, can't hurt at all.

I’ve never been asked for registration. Only license and insurance. Typically insurance I show is real time card from providers website.

NEVER, unless you're in an area where crossing the borders (Mex/Can) is a daily/weekly event..

Exactly. It's all about a money grab. They know what you have but if you don't have that piece of paper, it's ticket time. Just like they know if you have a CCW, but if it's not in your wallet, you're screwed.

It's not a good idea to leave it on the counter at home.
