6.5x55 hands down.... gotta be a handloader though to make it shine.
Just discovered it myself only a couple of years ago. Was looking for a 6.5mm and damn near fell for the hype lavished upon that certain 6.5mm the tacticool wannabe's all froth over.

Pretty much anything pushing a .323 bullet. Or, especially, a .318 bullet....

Every one of them. The more people learn to "hunt" the better any cartridge gets.

Another forgotten one is the 300 Savage. It's been killing deer and bear for a very long time. IMHO it's the original short mag. Just to help keep it alive I'm having a custom #1 so chambered. My smith thinks I'm nuts LOL

338 Federal, all the features of the 358 Winchester, but with more modern ballistics.

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

6.5 X 55 is definitely quite underrated and I'm going to put in a vote for the 30/30 and 303 cartridges. They've been killing all types of North American game for years, yet today many hunters think the cartridges are approaching obsolescence.

The Swede! +1. Loaded in a strong action, it will suck the doors off a Creedmoor. The first Swede I ever saw was in a garage sale, a classic original '96 the ol' gent had $125 on, including ammo. He swore the scandinavians used it for decades to kill moose. Looking at the cartridge, I lost all confidence in his possession of the facts, and passed on the purchase.
I'm still kicking myself. But I now also own more 6.5X55 than any other chambering.

Grousechaser,
Just curious: How exactly does the 6.5x55 "suck the doors off a Creedmoor"?
Asking because I've owned several of both--though right now don't have a 6.5 Creedmoor. Do have a custom 6.5x55 built on an FN Mauser commercial 98 action, with a custom "California English" walnut stock, which I'll probably never sell.
The difference in powder capacity is around 8%. with the same bullet seated to standard OAL. This means a potential difference in muzzle velocity of about 2% when both are loaded to the same pressure, which amounts to around 50 fps with 140-grain bullets, in barrels of the same length.

Part of the reason the .25 WSSM might be underrated is both rifles and ammo are scarce. Partly this is because the WSSMs never sold well--and a big part of the reason for that was rebarreling any common bolt action for the rounds was extremely impractical. That's not true of the .25-06, which gets about the same velocities.
