Due to farming, I was only able to hunt for morels twice this spring. Got enough for a couple meals. Morels are a big deal in this neck of the woods and there are reports of up to $60.00 a pound for them.

The small town of Muscoda, WI has their Morel Fest tomorrow and the my wife and I plus some neighbors, are going for the fire department steak feed and fireworks on the river.

That’s a good mess of mushrooms. I didn’t know you guys had them that far north. Congratulations!

It probably depends where or what they are growing out of. We had one pop up under some pine trees in the back yard a couple years back and we were really looking forward to eating it with a tenderloin. Thank goodness that we also had some regular store bought to go with those steaks because that morel was terrible in comparison with the store bought mushrooms.

Awesome. I’ve paid a lot per lb for them professionally. My favorite fungus. Second only to truffles in my book. In some ways, maybe even better. Not a forager myself, but I don’t think we have them up in here (NH/ME) anyway. Morels and Ramps are two of my favorite wild, seasonal, regional delicacies.

Thought I read in a thread on same topic last year that they tend to pop up in places not long after burns? That would make for a good harvest year in the Pacific Northwest. Lol.

Morels taste exactly like whatever you marinate or season them in. Like most mushrooms they have little to no taste themselves. They are also a big thing around here with the Rednecks I grew up with think that Morel season and turkey hunting are what spring is all about.

I would agree with that statement if you threw in Walleye fishing.
This is just from this week, Backstrap roast and marinated turkey breast k'bobs. both with Ramps, Morel and one night some fresh fiddle heads I found chasing thunder chickens.

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

I wouldn't ruin morels with meat... they're a "meat" to themselves and a total stand alone entree done right.

Some crappie, turkey tits, morels and beers make a hell of a fine meal.
